This Week in Sport: 8th May − 14th May 2023

Going into the second week of May, there are some huge fixtures taking place across the world. On Monday, the Los Angeles Lakers host the Golden State Warriors in Game 4 of the Western Conference Semifinals, the Champions League first leg Semi-Final clash between Real Madrid and Manchester City takes place on Tuesday, and Wednesday sees the Vegas Golden Knights travel to the Edmonton Oilers in the NHL Playoffs. On Thursday, the ATP Tour’s Italian Open continues, and the Giro d’Italia continues on Friday with Stage 7.

Heading into the weekend, Saracens take on the Northampton Saints in the Premiership Rugby Semifinals on Saturday, and Sunday sees Manchester United and Chelsea head to Wembley to battle it out for the Women’s FA Cup.

NBA: Los Angeles Lakers v Golden State Warriors

On Monday, the Golden State Warriors are in Los Angeles to take on the Lakers in Game 4 of the Western Conference Semifinals. The Lakers took a 2-1 lead in the series last time out, with a fairly convincing 127-97 win over their opponents, and will be looking to repeat this in Game 4. The Warriors, on the other hand, will be hoping their key players, such as Steph Curry and Klay Thompson, can deliver big performances to level the series.

UEFA Champions League: Real Madrid v Manchester City

Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, Madrid

A standout tie in this year’s UEFA Champions League sees Real Madrid take on Manchester City in the Semifinals. The first leg takes place on Tuesday, as City travel to the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid. Manchester City head into the tie as favourites, but reigning champions Madrid bring a wealth of experience into this matchup. Who will come out on top in this one?

NHL: Edmonton Oilers v Vegas Golden Knights

On Wednesday, the Edmonton Oilers host the Vegas Golden Knights in Game 4 of their Second Round NHL Play-off series. The two sides have looked well matched all season, finishing just one win apart in the division standings. The Oilers comfortably beat the LA Kings for their spot in the Second Round, and the Golden Knights had an equally comfortable series against the Winnipeg Jets. Both sides will be hoping to produce similar performances in this series to get ever closer to the famed Stanley Cup.

ATP Tour: Internazionali BNL d'Italia Day 2

The ATP tour’s Italian Open gets underway this week, as some of the best clay court players in the world come together in Rome. Novak Djokovic comes into the tournament as favourite, but Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev, and Stefanos Tsitsipas will all have their eyes on the top prize. The WTA’s tournament will run parallel with the men’s, with Iga Świątek aiming for her third successive title in the competition.

Giro d’Italia: Giro d’Italia Day 7

Capua, Italy

The Giro d’Italia continues into Friday for Stage 7, as the riders take on a mountain stage of 218 kilometres from Capua to Gran Sasso. The route heads through the Apennines mountain range, for what is the second longest stage of the race.

Premiership Rugby: Saracens v Northampton Saints

On Saturday, Premiership Rugby action as the Northampton Saints head to London to face Saracens in a Semi-final matchup. Both sides have had strong seasons, but Saracens will go into this tie as favourites, after showing themselves as the team to beat in the regular season. The Saints, however, will know they have it in them to beat the London-based side, after defeating them 38-29 less than a month ago.

Women’s FA Cup: Manchester United Women v Chelsea Women

Sunday 14th May 2:30PM GMT/1:30PM Local Time

Wembley Stadium, London

A huge matchup rounds out the week, as Manchester United Women take on Chelsea Women at Wembley in the FA Cup Final on Sunday. The two sides have been in outstanding form, with both still being in with a shot of winning a league and cup double this season. Chelsea have controlled this competition of late, looking for their third successive FA Cup title, but with England internationals such as Mary Earps and Alessia Russo at their disposable, Manchester United will be looking to stop their dominance.
