This Week in Sport: 1st May − 7th May 2023

The first week of May sees a great variety of top sporting action taking place across the world. On Monday, Mark Selby takes on Luca Brecel in the concluding sessions of the World Snooker Championship Final, Tuesday sees the Golden State Warriors host the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA Conference Semifinals, and on Wednesday, Day 9 of the WTA Tour’s Mutua Madrid Open takes place. On Thursday, the Wells Fargo Championship gets underway, and on Friday, the Gujarat Titans head to the Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League.

Heading into the weekend, the Giro d’Italia begins on Saturday, and the Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix rounds out the week on Sunday.

Snooker Majors: World Championship Final

The concluding sessions of the World Snooker Championship Final takes place on Monday, as Mark Selby and Luca Brecel continue their close fight for supremacy at the Crucible Theatre. Mark Selby made a historic 147 break in Sunday’s session, the first ever in a World Championship Final, but Luca Brecel takes a tight 9-8 advantage into the final day.

NBA: Golden State Warriors v Los Angeles Lakers

Tuesday 2nd May 2:00AM (3rd) GMT/7:00PM Local Time

Chase Center, San Francisco

On Tuesday, Game 1 of the NBA Conference Semi-final clash between the Golden State Warriors and the Los Angeles Lakers takes place. The Lakers travel to the Chase Center off the back of a convincing series win over the Memphis Grizzlies in Round 1, whereas the Warriors had to battle to the end against the Sacramento Kings. This is sure to be a great matchup.

WTA Tour: Mutua Madrid Open Day 9

Wednesday 3rd May 9:00AM GMT/11:00AM Local Time

Wednesday sees the WTA and ATP Tour’s Madrid Open head into their ninth and eighth days, respectively. First seed, Iga Świątek, looks strong favourite to win the Women’s Singles trophy, winning her first two matches in straight sets. In the men’s tournament, Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev, and Stefanos Tsitsipas all look like strong contenders for the title.

PGA Tour: Wells Fargo Championship Day 1

Thursday 4th May 12:00PM GMT/8:00AM Local Time

Quail Hollow Club, Charlotte

On Thursday, the Wells Fargo Championship gets underway at the Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte. Reigning champion, Max Homa, returns to defend his trophy, but will face tough competition from the likes of Rory McIlroy, Xander Schauffele, and Patrick Cantlay. World numbers one and two, Jon Rahm and Scottie Scheffler, have decided to sit this event out.

Indian Premier League: Rajasthan Royals v Gujarat Titans

Friday 5th May 2:00PM GMT/7:30PM Local Time

Sawai Mansingh Stadium, Jaipur

A top of the table clash in the Indian Premier League on Friday, as the Gujarat Titans head to Jaipur to face off against the Rajasthan Royals. The Titans currently sit top of the IPL table, winning six and only losing two, so will be looking to bring their fine form into this match. The Royals are also looking strong this season, but with three losses in their last five, they will have to produce a big performance to beat the reigning champions.

Giro d’Italia: Giro d’Italia Day 1

Saturday 6th April 9:00AM GMT/11:00AM Local Time

Fossacesia Marina, Italy

The first of the three cycling Grand Tours gets underway on Saturday, as the riders begin their journey from the Abruzzo region of Italy, travelling almost 3,500km to finish in Rome on 28th May. Australian rider and reigning champion, Jai Hindley, returns for this year’s race, but the likes of Remco Evenepoel, Primož Roglič, and Geraint Thomas will offer up tough opposition.

Formula 1: Miami Grand Prix

Sunday 7th May 7:30PM GMT/3:30PM Local Time

Miami International Autodrome, Miami Gardens

For the second time, Formula 1 heads to the Miami International Autodrome on Sunday for the Miami Grand Prix. Red Bull have been dominant so far this season, achieving 1-2 finishes in every race but one this season, putting them as strong favourites in Miami. Ferrari, Aston Martin, and Mercedes are all closely matched, but will be hoping they can find that extra pace to ultimately beat the Red Bull duo of Max Verstappen and Sergio Pérez.
