This Week in Sport: 29th May − 4th June 2023

The sporting world offers up some exciting fixtures this week. On Monday, the Boston Celtics face the Miami Heat in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals, the French Open Grand Slam continues Tuesday, and Wednesday sees the State of Origin Series get underway. On Thursday, the NBA Finals begin, and the Diamond League heads to Italy on Friday.

Heading into the weekend, Manchester City and Manchester United will battle it out at Wembley for the FA Cup on Saturday, and Formula 1 heads to Barcelona for the Spanish Grand Prix on Sunday.

NBA: Boston Celtics v Miami Heat

The Eastern Conference Finals between the Boston Celtics and the Miami Heat head into Game 7 of the series and the Celtics look to complete a historic comeback. The Heat held a 3-0 series lead, but after beating the buzzer in Game 6 to win 104-103, the Celtics have managed to level the series in almost unbelievable fashion. There is no doubt that this game will produce fireworks.

Grand Slam (Tennis): French Open (Day 3)

Stade Roland Garros, Paris

The 2023 French Open continues into this week at Roland Garros in Paris, with day 3 taking place on Tuesday. In the Women’s Singles, Iga Świątek will be looking to retain her title, but with Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina both in excellent form, this successive title may be hard to come by. In the Men’s tournament, Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic, and Daniil Medvedev all have a good chance of leaving France with the trophy.

State of Origin Series: Queensland Maroons v New South Wales Blues

The annual rugby league State of Origin Series gets underway on Wednesday, as the New South Wales Blues take on the Queensland Maroons. Game 1 of the series takes place at the Adelaide Oval. The Maroons won the series last year, but the two sides have been well matched in recent history, so it is sure to be an exciting affair this time around.

NBA: NBA Finals

The NBA Finals get underway this Thursday, a seven-game series to decide who is the best NBA side this season. The Denver Nuggets have already secured their spot in the Finals, after dominating the Los Angeles Lakers in a 4-0 series win in the Western Conference Finals. Who they will face in the Finals will be decided on Monday, as the Boston Celtics and Miami Heat take their series to a Game 7 decider.

Diamond League: Diamond League Italy

Stadio Olimpico, Rome, Italy

The Diamond League heads to Italy this Friday for a showcase of the best athletes in the world. The event will see 15 Olympic champions and 31 World champions compete. Notable events to keep an eye on include the Men’s 100m, which will see Olympic champion Marcell Jacobs go up against world champion Fred Kerley, and the Women’s 400m hurdles, as Femke Bol from the Netherlands will face tough competition from Shamier Little from the US.

FA Cup: Manchester City v Manchester United

Wembley Stadium, London

The English football domestic season comes to an end on Saturday, as Manchester City and Manchester United face off at Wembley Stadium in the FA Cup Final. City go into the match as favourites, after finding phenomenal form in the latter stages of the season, whilst United will have a renewed confidence after securing a Champions League spot in the league. With both teams looking for their second trophy of the season, this will be a Manchester derby you won’t want to miss.

Formula 1: Spanish Grand Prix

Sunday 4th June 1:00PM GMT/3:00PM Local Time

Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, Barcelona

Formula 1 heads to Barcelona on Sunday for the Spanish Grand Prix. Max Verstappen is beginning to open the gap between himself and the rest of the field in the Driver’s Championship, but Red Bull teammate Sergio Pérez and Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso will be keen to keep within touching distance and jump on any mistakes the Dutch driver makes. Who will take the top step of the podium in this race?
