This Week in Sport: 26th February − 3rd March 2024

There are some exciting sporting events taking place around the globe this week. Coventry City host Maidstone United in the FA Cup on Monday, the Colorado Avalanche take on the Dallas Stars in the NHL on Tuesday, and Wednesday will see the Los Angeles Clippers go head-to-head with rivals the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA. The first Test match between New Zealand and Australia gets underway on Thursday, and Friday will see the World Athletics Indoor Championships begin in Glasgow.

Heading into the weekend, the new Formula 1 season begins with the Bahrain Grand Prix, and Sunday will see Premier League action with the Manchester derby.

FA Cup: Coventry City v Maidstone Utd

On Monday, non-league side Maidstone United continue their fairy-tale FA Cup run as they travel to Coventry City for their Fifth Round matchup at the Coventry Building Society Arena. The home side will be clear favourites in this one, sitting ninth in the Championship, four divisions above their opponents, who currently play in the National League South. The visitors are the first team from outside the top five divisions in English football to reach the FA Cup fifth round since 1978, and many will want to see them continue a magical cup run which has seen them beat Ipswich Town and Stevenage.

NHL: Colorado Avalanche v Dallas Stars

Tuesday will see a Central Division clash in the Western Conference in the NHL, as top of the division, the Dallas Stars, travel to third place, the Colorado Avalanche. The game, which will be played at the Ball Arena in Denver, is an exciting tie in the battle for Playoff positions, with both sides currently sitting on 35 wins, only separated by their loss and overtime loss differences.

NBA: Los Angeles Clippers v Los Angeles Lakers

Los Angeles rivals, the LA Clippers and the LA Lakers, will go head-to-head in the NBA on Wednesday at the Crypto.com Arena. The Clippers currently sit fourth in the Western Conference, enjoying a reasonably strong season, with a record of 37-19, whilst their city rivals sit down in ninth, with a record of 31-28.

Cricket in New Zealand: New Zealand v Australia - 1st Test - Day 1

Thursday 29th February 10:00PM (28th) GMT/11:00AM Local Time

On Thursday, the first Test match of two between New Zealand and Australia will begin at the Basin Reserve in Wellington. The visitors currently sit top of the Men’s Test Team Rankings, and the current ICC World Test Championship holders will hope to show their quality in New Zealand, but the home side, who sit fifth in the rankings, will hope they can use their home advantage to overcome a tough opponent.

World Athletics Indoor Championships: World Indoor Championships 2024 Day 1

Emirates Arena, Glasgow

Friday will see the World Athletics Indoor Championships begin at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow. The event will see 26 events take place and more than 700 competitors from over 130 countries will take part. This event is the 19th edition of the competition, and this is the first time it has been held in Scotland. Day 1 will see Finals in Women’s High Jump, Men’s Shot Put, Men’s 60m and both Men’s and Women’s 400m Semifinals.

Formula 1: Bahrain Grand Prix

Bahrain International Circuit, Southern Governorate

The new Formula 1 season gets underway this week with the Bahrain Grand Prix on Saturday at the Bahrain International Circuit. Fans will be hoping for a more competitive season this year, as Max Verstappen and Red Bull ran away with the Drivers’ and Constructors’ titles, respectively, in the 2023 season. The Dutchman also won last year’s Bahrain Grand Prix, but Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton also have experience winning on this track.

Premier League: Manchester City v Manchester United

Sunday 3rd March 3:30PM GMT/3:30PM Local Time

City of Manchester Stadium, Manchester

On Sunday, the Premier League will see the Manchester derby take place between reigning champions, Manchester City, and their rivals Manchester United. The hosts will go in as clear favourites for this one, sitting second in the league, one point behind Liverpool, and on the hunt for their fourth league title in a row. United, on the other hand, have had a mixed season, sitting in sixth and losing last time out to Fulham at home.
