This Week in Sport: 4th March − 10th March 2024

There are many exciting sporting events taking place in the upcoming week. On Monday, the New York Rangers take on the Florida Panthers in the NHL, Tuesday will see the Cleveland Cavaliers host the Boston Celtics in the NBA, and the Indian Wells Open begins on Wednesday. On Thursday, the Sydney Swans host Melbourne in the AFL, and Anthony Joshua and Francis Ngannou go head-to-head in the ring on Friday.

Heading into the weekend, England face Ireland in the Men’s Six Nations, and Liverpool take on Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday.

NHL: New York Rangers v Florida Panthers

The New York Rangers host the Florida Panthers in the NHL at Madison Square Garden on Monday. The Rangers currently sit top of the Metropolitan Division in the Eastern Conference with a record of 40-17-4, whilst their opponents sit top of the Atlantic Division, with a record of 41-16-4. This is sure to be a high-quality affair.

NBA: Cleveland Cavaliers v Boston Celtics

On Tuesday, the Cleveland Cavaliers host the Boston Celtics at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in the NBA. The Cavaliers, who sit third in the Eastern Conference with a record of 39-21, will have a tough time beating the Celtics, who sit top of the same Conference and have won their last 11 games and have an overall record of 48-12.

WTA & ATP Tour: BNP Paribas Open Day 1

Wednesday 6th March 7:00PM GMT/11:00AM Local Time

Indian Wells Tennis Garden, Indian Wells

The BNP Paribas Open, or the Indian Wells Open, gets underway on Wednesday at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. In the men’s competition, current Wimbledon Champion, Carlos Alcaraz, returns to defend his title, whilst in the women’s singles, Elena Rybakina will be hoping to win the competition in consecutive years.

AFL: Sydney Swans v Melbourne

Thursday 7th March 8:30AM GMT/7:30PM Local Time

Sydney Cricket Ground, Sydney

On Thursday, the new AFL season gets underway, as the Sydney Swans take on Melbourne at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Melbourne last won the competition in 2021, whilst the Swans haven’t won since 2012. Collingwood will look to defend their 2023 title and make it a record of 17 wins in the AFL. The Brisbane Lions and Greater Western Sydney Giants are amongst the other favourites for the title.

Boxing Fights: Anthony Joshua v Francis Ngannou

Friday 8th March 3:20PM GMT/6:20PM Local Time

KINGDOM ARENA, Riyadh

Anthony Joshua looks to continue rebuilding his career with a boxing fight against former UFC Heavyweight Champion Francis Ngannou at KINGDOM ARENA in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Joshua, who is the former two-time unified World Heavyweight boxing Champion, will want to beat Ngannou convincingly, as it is only the latter’s second professional boxing bout. Also fighting during the event, Zhilei Zhang will take on Joseph Parker and Rey Vargas will defend his WBC Featherweight World title against Nick Ball. The event will begin on Friday evening, local time, but the main event could take place early morning on 9th March.

Six Nations: England v Ireland

Twickenham Stadium, London

The Six Nations enters its penultimate round of matches this weekend, and the most notable of the round is England versus Ireland at Twickenham Stadium on Saturday. England, who lost 30-21 to Scotland last time out, will be looking to up their performance against an unbeaten Ireland side, who are the reigning Six Nations Champions and Grand Slam winners, and look motivated to repeat this feat in this year’s competition, after gaining bonus points in all their matches so far.

Premier League: Liverpool v Manchester City

Sunday 10th March 3:45PM GMT/3:45PM Local Time

Anfield, Liverpool

The Premier League title race sees potentially its most important game of the season so far, as Liverpool face Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday. The hosts currently sit one point above City in the table, and 5 above Arsenal, although the latter have a game in hand. Both sides are in great form, and a win for either will see them edge ever closer to the top prize in English football.
