This Week in Sport: 22nd January − 28th January 2024

There is a lot of exciting sporting action coming up this week around the world. On Monday, the Boston Bruins face the Winnipeg Jets in the NHL, Chelsea host Middlesbrough in the second leg of the Carabao Cup Semifinals on Tuesday, and the Big Bash League Final will take place on Wednesday. On Thursday, the first day of the first Test match between India and England will take place, and Friday will see FA Cup action, as Tottenham Hotspur take on Manchester City.

Heading into the weekend, the Australian Open Women’s Singles Final will take place on Saturday, and NFL action will round out the week, as the Baltimore Ravens take on the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Conference Final.

NHL: Boston Bruins v Winnipeg Jets

TD Garden, Boston

On Monday, the Boston Bruins, who sit top of the Atlantic Division with a record of 28-8-9, will host the Winnipeg Jets at TD Garden, who currently sit on a record of 30-10-4 and are top of the Central Division. Both sides will be looking to continue their winning streaks and put more distance between themselves and second place in their respective divisions.

Carabao Cup: Chelsea v Middlesbrough

Tuesday 23rd January 8:00PM GMT/8:00PM Local Time

Stamford Bridge, London

On Tuesday, Chelsea will host Championship side Middlesbrough in the second leg of their Carabao Cup tie at Stamford Bridge. Middlesbrough put in an impressive performance in the first leg against their Premier League opponents, winning the match 1-0, despite Chelsea dominating possession, but will know they have a difficult task at hand to progress to the Final. Fulham will host Liverpool in the other match on Wednesday, with Liverpool going into the matchup leading 2-1 on aggregate.

Big Bash League: Final

Wednesday 24th January 8:15AM GMT/7:15PM Local Time

Sydney Cricket Ground, Sydney

Wednesday will see the Final of the Big Bash League take place at the Sydney Cricket Ground. The Sydney Sixers, who defeated the Brisbane Heat in the Qualifier match, are waiting to see who they face in the Final, with the Heat facing the Adelaide Strikers in the Challenger match on Monday.

Cricket in India: India v England

Thursday 25th January 4:00AM GMT/9:30AM Local Time

Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium Hyderabad, Hyderabad

England head to India for a five Test series, with the first Test beginning on Thursday at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium Hyderabad. The home side currently sit second in the ICC Test rankings, whilst England sit in third. The visitors will look to bring their aggressive style of Test cricket to the series against an Indian side who are almost always dominant on home soil.

FA Cup: Tottenham Hotspur v Manchester City

Friday 26th January 8:00PM GMT/8:00PM Local Time

Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, London

On Friday, Tottenham Hotspur will host the reigning champions, Manchester City, in the Fourth Round of the FA Cup. The visitors are on a hunt for their second consecutive, and eighth overall, title in the competition, and beat Huddersfield Town 5-0 in the previous round. Spurs had a tougher game in the Third Round, beating Burnley 1-0.

Grand Slam (Tennis): Australian Open Day 14

Saturday 27th January 12:00AM GMT/11:00AM Local Time

Melbourne Park, Melbourne

The Australian Open comes to its conclusion this week, and the Final of the Women’s Singles will take place at Melbourne Park on Saturday. Current favourites to lift the trophy include reigning champion, Aryna Sabalenka, and Coco Gauff. The Men’s Singles takes place on Sunday, with Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, and Jannik Sinner amongst the favourites

NFL: Baltimore Ravens v Kansas City Chiefs

Sunday 28th January 8:00PM GMT/3:00PM Local Time

M&T Bank Stadium, Baltimore

The NFL Conference Finals will take place on Sunday, and the Baltimore Ravens will host the reigning champions, the Kansas City Chiefs, in the AFC Conference Final. The Chiefs managed an exciting win against the Buffalo Bills to progress through the Divisional Round, whilst the Ravens put on an impressive second half performance to beat the Houston Texans to get the Conference Finals. In the NFC, the Detroit Lions will travel to the San Francisco 49ers.
