This Week in Sport: 15th January − 21st January 2024
There are some extremely exciting sporting fixtures taking place around the world this week. On Monday, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers face the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFL Wild Card Round, Tuesday sees the Perth Scorchers take on the Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League, and the Australian Open continues Wednesday. On Thursday, the Boston Bruins host the Colorado Avalanche in the NHL, and there is NBA action on Friday, with the Boston Celtics facing the Denver Nuggets.
Heading into the weekend, UFC 297 will take place on Saturday, and more NFL action will round out the week, with the final AFC Divisional Round game on Sunday.
NFL: Tampa Bay Buccaneers v Philadelphia Eagles

On Monday, the final Wild Card Round matchup between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Philadelphia Eagles will take place at the Raymond James Stadium. The hosts finished top of the NFC South in the regular season with a record of 9-8, whilst the Eagles, who were last year’s Super Bowl runners-up, finished second in the NFC East with a record of 11-6.
Big Bash League: Perth Scorchers v Sydney Sixers

Tuesday will see exciting Big Bash League action, as the five-time winners and reigning champions, the Perth Scorchers, host the Sydney Sixers at Perth Stadium. This is the penultimate game before the BBL Play-offs, with both sides already qualifying. There is still a lot riding on this match, though, as the winner of this will secure second place in the table, giving them two shots at making the Final, through the initial Qualifier against first place, and then, if that game is lost, through the Challenger match.
Grand Slam (Tennis): Australian Open Day 4

The Australian Open Grand Slam continues into Day 4 on Wednesday at Melbourne Park. In the men’s singles, Wednesday will see tournament favourite, Novak Djokovic, face Alexei Popyrin, as well as Christoper Eubanks taking on Andrey Rublev, and Jannik Sinner facing Jesper De Jong. In the women’s tournament, Wednesday will see reigning champion Aryna Sabalenka take on Brenda Fruhvirtova, and Coco Gauff will go up against Caroline Dolehide.
NHL: Boston Bruins v Colorado Avalanche

On Thursday, the Boston Bruins face the Colorado Avalanche in the NHL at TD Garden. The Bruins currently sit top of the Atlantic Division with a record of 25-8-9, whilst the Avalanche are second in the Central Division, sitting on a record of 28-12-3. This should be a thrilling game.
NBA: Boston Celtics v Denver Nuggets

There is NBA action on Friday, as the Boston Celtics host the Denver Nuggets in an exciting matchup. The reigning champions will travel to Boston sitting third in the Western Conference, with a record of 28-13, whilst the hosts look like the team to beat, sitting top of the Eastern Conference with a record of 30-9, and are yet to lose at home this season.
UFC: UFC 297 - Strickland v Du Plessis

UFC 297 takes place on Saturday at the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, with champion Sean Strickland taking on Dricus du Plessis to defend his Middleweight title. Also on the main card, a Women’s Bantamweight title bout between Raquel Pennington and Mayra Bueno Silva.
NFL: AFC Divisional Round

The NFL’s Divisional Round games will take place over the weekend, with the final matchup being a currently undecided game in the AFC. The game will either see the Kansas City Chiefs travel to the Buffalo Bills, or the Baltimore Ravens host the Pittsburgh Steelers, depending on how results go in the remainder of the Wild Card Round.
