The Afghanistan national cricket team has risen from associate status to become one of international cricket’s most competitive sides. The International Cricket Council granted Afghanistan Full Member status in 2017, giving the team the right to play Test cricket alongside One Day Internationals (ODIs) and Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is). Afghanistan made history by reaching the semifinals of the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, its best result at a senior men’s world tournament, and also reached the semifinals of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. The squad is known for its powerful spin attack and exciting batting, led by star leg-spinner Rashid Khan and experienced all-rounder Mohammad Nabi. Key players include wicketkeeper-batter Rahmanullah Gurbaz, batter Ibrahim Zadran, spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman and fast bowler Fazalhaq Farooqi. Afghanistan has produced several globally recognised players, with Rashid Khan earning distinction as one of the leading T20 bowlers. Because of local conditions, the team has hosted international home fixtures at venues outside Afghanistan, including Sharjah Cricket Stadium in the United Arab Emirates and Greater Noida Sports Complex Ground in India.
