Event of the Day: Somerset v Middlesex

Our event of the day...

is Day 2 of the final round of fixtures from Division 1 of the County Championship. Somerset versus Middlesex at The Cooper Associates County Ground, Taunton, is the pick of the games as Somerset look to make an unlikely escape from relegation. Only a win will do as they look to reign in either Hampshire (whose game against already-relegated Warwickshire has been delayed due to a wet outfield) or their opponents Middlesex. Once again, it’s set to be a tense conclusion to the season with everybody’s attention on developments in Taunton.

Somerset were bowled out for 236 yesterday, however, they fought back well leaving Middlesex 18-3 overnight. On a green pitch in tough conditions, the match is still very much in the balance. With the England Ashes squad announced on Wednesday, Somerset players Craig Overton and Jack Leach as well as Middlesex players Sam Robson, Dawid Malan and Steven Finn will be hoping to have one more eye-catching performance so the selectors take notice. It is all set up for an exciting day of cricket.

ariund the globe go to the latest round of UEFA Champions League fixtures as Manchester City face a potentially tricky evening at the Etihad Stadium against Shakhtar Donetsk who currently top the Ukrainian League. However, after an impressive outing in their last European venture, and looking in ominous form as they dispatched Crystal Palace in the Premier League at the weekend, the Manchester club will be strong favourites to get another 3 points.

It is also the round of 32 in the Wuhan Open in China with Karolína Plíšková, Caroline Wozniacki and Garbiñe Muguruza all in action. MLB sees 15 games going ahead, with the Chicago Cubs versus the St Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium in St Louis, a standout fixture. The World Rowing Championships continue, including the Women’s and Men’s Eight heats.
