Event of the Day: Atlético Madrid v Chelsea

Our event of the day...

is the UEFA Champions League clash between Atlético Madrid and Chelsea at Atlético’s impressive new Wanda Metropolitano stadium in Spain’s capital. Chelsea currently top Group C after the first round of games after comfortably beating FK Qarabag 6-0 at Stamford Bridge. Meanwhile Atlético will want to get their European campaign up and running in earnest after a disappointing stalemate against Roma earlier in the month. It’s set to be a high-quality game as the reigning champions of England take on an Atlético side that has reached the competition’s final twice in the previous four seasons.

Adding to intrigue is the saga surrounding Chelsea’s star striker from last season, Diego Costa. Having moved to Chelsea from Atlético in 2014, Costa has been in exile this summer after falling out with Chelsea manager Antonio Conte and has subsequently negotiated a move back to Atlético. While he won’t be playing tonight, Atlético may parade their new signing in front of the home fans in the build-up to kick-off. With this and a number of other transfer dealings between the two clubs, it all could add an edge to what promises to be a tense and closely-fought contest.

Honourable mentions...

around the globe go to the penultimate ODI between England and the West Indies at the Kia Oval in London. Ben Stokes and Alex Hales will miss the match due to an investigation into an incident in the early hours of Monday morning in Bristol.

The 2017 World Rowing Championships  continue in Sarasota-Bradenton, USA with the Men’s Single Sculls and the Lightweight Men’s Single Sculls semi-finals. In tennis, Agnieszka Radwańska is up against Ashleigh Barty in the round of 16 at the Wuhan Open in China.
