Our event of the day...

is day two of the 16th IAAF World Championships in London’s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford. The first Championships were in 1983 in Helsinki, since that event the United States have been the leading nation with 143 gold medals followed by Russia with 53 and Kenya with 50 overall.

The last championships in 2015 in Beijing, saw sensational performances from Usain Bolt who won the treble of the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay, Mo Farah who won the double of the 5,000m and 10,000m and Jessica Ennis-Hill who won the heptathlon a year after giving birth to her son Reggie.

The London Championships started yesterday with Farah's win in the 10,000m the moment of the night in a spectacular race. Highlights today are the men’s 400m first round with Wayde van Niekerk who holds the world record of 43.03 seconds, the women’s 1,500m semi-final races with Sifan Hassan, Caster Semenya and Laura Muir and the men’s 100m race with Usain Bolt desperate to win his 12th World Championships gold. It is set up perfectly for a thrilling day of athletics.

around the globe go to the Super Rugby Final with the Lions up against the Crusaders at Ellis Park in Johannesburg.

It is the 2nd day of the forth test match between England and South Africa at Old Trafford with the game evenly poised with England closing day 1 on 260 runs for the loss of 6 wickets. The Citi Open in Washington continues. In the AFL there are 5 matches with Great Western Sydney Giants versus Melbourne Demons as the pick of the day. There are three NRL games with the Raiders visit to the Sharks the highlight. It is day 3 of the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational.
