This Week in Sport: 28th July − 3rd August 2025

We say goodbye to July with some premium sporting action. On Monday, the Milwaukee Brewers host the Chicago Cubs in MLB. That’s followed by the continuation of the World Aquatics Championships on Tuesday. On Wednesday, the Canadian Open continues on the ATP and WTA Tours. Thursday sees the start of the fifth and final Test between England and India, and the Adelaide Crows host Hawthorn in an exciting AFL match on Friday.
The first weekend of August also brings us plenty of must-see sport. On Saturday, Australia host the British & Irish Lions for the third and final Test Match between the two sides and Formula One heads to Hungary on Sunday for the Hungarian Grand Prix.
MLB: Milwaukee Brewers v Chicago Cubs
Monday 28th July 11:40PM GMT/6:40PM Local
American Family Field, Milwaukee
The Milwaukee Brewers host the Chicago Cubs at American Family Field in Milwaukee for a regular-season divisional clash in MLB. Heading into this pivotal game, the Brewers and Cubs are tied atop the NL Central standings. The winner of this game, and the subsequent series, would take an important divisional lead. On the mound for Milwaukee will be rookie phenom Jacob Misiorowski, who has had a near-unprecedented start to his major league career. However, how will he fare against the Cubs’ power-hitting duo of Pete Crow-Armstrong and Seiya Suzuki?
World Aquatics Championships: World Aquatics Championships Day 19
Tuesday 29th July 1:00AM GMT/9:00AM Local
Singapore Sports Hub, Singapore
The World Aquatics Championships continue at the Singapore Sports Hub in Singapore. A wealth of swimming and diving medals will be decided today. Katie Ledecky will be in the pool, aiming for her sixth women's 1500m freestyle World Championship medal. Meanwhile, the men’s Olympic 100m backstroke champion, Thomas Ceccon, looks to build on his Olympic gold with his second world championship title. In the diving, don’t miss the women’s 3m synchronized and the men’s 10m synchronized, where the question remains as to whether anyone can challenge the ever-dominant Chinese pairs.
ATP Tour: Canadian Open Day 4
Wednesday 30th July 6:30PM GMT/2:30PM Local
Sobeys Stadium, Toronto
The Canadian Open continues at Sobeys Stadium in Toronto on the ATP Tour and IGA Stadium in Montreal on the WTA Tour. World number 24 Alexei Popyrin will look to defend his men’s singles title in the absence of players like Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, and Novak Djokovic. However, the top seeds of Alexander Zverev, Taylor Fritz, Lorenzo Musetti, and Ben Shelton pose a strong challenge. Meanwhile, Coco Gauff and Iga Świątek headline the women’s draw, with world number four Jessica Pegula entering as defending champion. The Canadian Open serves as a perfect warm-up for those hoping to make a deep run in the US Open, which begins at the end of August.
Cricket in England: England v India (5th Test) Day 1
Thursday 31st July 10:00AM GMT/11:00AM Local
The Oval, London
England host India at the Oval in the fifth and final Test between the two sides. England were denied the opportunity to claim a series win in Manchester last week, as a resilient India responded magnificently to a 669-run first innings by England. With the fourth Test drawn, it all comes to this final showdown at the famous Oval ground. If India can once again put on a vintage display and win the fifth Test, it will be the first time they have avoided overall defeat in back-to-back tours since 2007. However, England will be eager to win the newly named Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy outright and carry some strong momentum into the Ashes later this year. England will need a better bowling performance and a continuation of the good batting form seen at Old Trafford, which saw Joe Root hit 150 and Stokes make 141 along with four other players scoring 47 or more in their only innings.
AFL: Adelaide Crows v Hawthorn
Friday 1st August 9:40AM GMT/7:10PM Local
Adelaide Oval, Adelaide
Adelaide host Hawthorn in a high-stakes AFL clash at the Adelaide Oval in Adelaide. The Crows enter this game in second place, riding a five-game win streak and coming off a dominant 98-point win over local rivals Port Adelaide. Led by top-ten goalkicker Riley Tilethorpe, Adelaide seem well on their way to challenging for their first AFL Premiership since 1998. However, Hawthorn will be no pushover. The last team to beat Adelaide before the start of their current win streak, the Hawks sit in fifth place and have won their last two games. With Jack Gunston leading the way, Hawthorn are angling for their first Premiership in a decade. The last match between these two sides was decided by just three points, so expect this one to go to the final siren.
British & Irish Lions Tour: Australia v British & Irish Lions
Saturday 2nd August 10:00AM GMT/8:00PM Local
Stadium Australia, Sydney
Australia host the British & Irish Lions at Stadium Australia in Sydney in the third and final Test Match of the Lions’ tour. The Lions have already secured a series victory after their thrilling comeback in the second Test Match over the weekend, marking the first Tour victory since 2013. However, a win for the Lions in the final Test Match would mark their first undefeated tour since 1974 and first sweep of a multi-Test Match tour since 1927. Meanwhile, the young Wallabies squad will attempt to learn as much as they can ahead of hosting the Rugby World Cup in 2027. Can the Lions hold their nerve and make history?
Formula 1: Hungarian Grand Prix
Sunday 3rd August 1:00PM GMT/3:00PM Local
Hungaroring, Mogyoród
Formula One continues with the Hungarian Grand Prix at the Hungaroring in Mogyoród. The last race before a summer break has the potential to shake up the standings. A spirited race under wet conditions in Belgium over the weekend saw Oscar Piastri hold off teammate Lando Norris and extend his Drivers’ Championship lead to 16 points. However, a win for Norris would tighten the standings ahead of racing resuming at the end of August. That said, Hungary will hold special significance for Piastri, as it is the circuit where, last year, he earned his first F1 race win. Can Piastri repeat in Hungary, or will Norris or another driver take the victory?
