This Week in Sport: 27th March − 2nd April 2023

As March comes to an end this week and April begins, there is no shortage of elite sporting events across the globe. On Monday, the Philadelphia 76ers head to Denver to face off against the Nuggets. This week sees the Miami Open get into the business end of the tournament, and on Wednesday Arsenal Women play host to Bayern Munich Women in a well-balanced Champions League tie. On Thursday, the opening day of the Houston Astros and Chicago White Sox series takes place, and on Friday the Indian Premier League gets underway with an exciting matchup between the Gujarat Titans and the Chennai Super Kings.

Heading into the weekend, Saturday there is boxing action as Anthony Joshua takes on Jermaine Franklin in London, and on Sunday the third race of the Formula 1 season takes place as the drivers head to Australia.

NBA: Denver Nuggets v Philadelphia 76ers

Top of the Western Conference, the Denver Nuggets, host third place in the Eastern Conference, the Philadelphia 76ers, in what is sure to be a high-quality basketball game. The Nuggets have been having an outstanding season, but March has seen some mixed performances from the Western’s top team. The 76ers also have a great shot of getting far in the playoffs at the end of the season, and they will be hoping to carry the momentum they have built recently into the final stages of the regular season. Who will come out on top in this one?

ATP Tour: Miami Open Day 7

The Miami Open continues into its second week, with some of the world’s best tennis players battling it out in the Florida heat. Tuesday sees the Round of 16 take place at the Hard Rock Stadium at the Miami Gardens. The WTA Women’s Singles Final will take place on Saturday, with the ATP Men’s Singles Final taking place the following day, so there is no shortage of action from this competitive tournament.

UEFA Women’s Champions League: Arsenal Women v FC Bayern München Women

Wednesday will see Arsenal take on Bayern Munich at the Emirates Stadium in the UEFA Women’s Champions League. Neither side were able to run away with the tie in the first leg, in what was a tightly contested affair. The German side go into this fixture with a one goal advantage, but Arsenal will be hoping their home-advantage will help see them through to the final four of this prestigious competition. It is all to play for in this one.

MLB: Houston Astros v Chicago White Sox

The Chicago White Sox travel to, the World Series holders, the Houston Astros this Thursday for the start of the new MLB season. The game is the beginning of a four-game series, where both sides will be wanting to get their new campaign off to a positive start. The Astros will be gunning for a fifth world series title in their 2023 campaign, after a title winning season in 2022. The White Sox, on the other hand, will be hoping for an improvement on their division position last season, in which they failed to progress to the postseason.

Indian Premier League: Gujarat Titans v Chennai Super Kings

The new Indian Premier League season begins on Friday with last year’s champions, the Gujurat Titans, hosting the serial tournament winners, the Chennai Super Kings. The Titans took their maiden season by storm, achieving victory over the Rajasthan Royals in Ahmedabad, at the same stadium where this match will take place. With cricket superstars such as Hardik Pandya and Rashid Khan from the Titans facing off against the likes of Ben Stokes and Ravindra Jadeja, there is no question that this will be a classic fixture.

Boxing Fights: Anthony Joshua v Jermaine Franklin

Two-time former world Heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua will spend his Saturday night battling it out against Jermaine Franklin. Joshua will be looking to put last year’s title losing fight against Oleksandr Usyk behind him and get back to winning ways. US boxer Franklin is himself coming off the back of a defeat, losing to British fighter Dillian Whyte, so both fighters will be fired up for victory this weekend. This is sure to be an exciting one that you won’t want to miss.

Formula 1: Australian Grand Prix

Melbourne Grand Prix Circuit, Albert Park

The Formula 1 season continues this Sunday with a trip down under for the Australian Grand Prix. With Red Bull achieving a 1-2 finish in consecutive races for the first time since 2009, and both Sergio Perez and Max Verstappen exhibiting blistering pace, they will be hoping their fine form continues into another weekend. Aston Martin and Mercedes will be among the teams looking to put pressure on the Red Bull pair.
