This Week in Sport: 14th March − 20th March 2022

Melbourne FC's Luke Jackson CelebratesThe next 7 days are an exciting prospect for sports fans across the world. Monday will see the culmination of a weather affected PLAYERS Championship. The following day, Manchester United host Atlético Madrid in the second leg of their Champions League tie. On Wednesday, Melbourne take on the Western Bulldogs in the first game of this year’s AFL season.

The next day, players will battle it out in the BNP Paribas Quarter Finals, taking place at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. Across the other side of the Atlantic, and on Friday, fans will eagerly anticipate the Cheltenham Festival Gold Cup. 

The weekend is also packed full of exciting sport. On Saturday, France go up against England in the hope of securing the grand slam. The final day of the week marks the start of the F1 season, as teams head to Bahrain each hoping they have designed the fastest car for the upcoming 23 race season.

 

PGA Tour: THE PLAYERS Championship

Hampered by weather that has hit Florida this week, this year’s PLAYERS Championship did not finish on Sunday. Instead players will finish their final rounds on Monday. With the current leaderboard full of less familiar names, it is anyone's guess as to who will take home the title.

UEFA Champions League: Manchester United v Atlético Madrid

After a tight 1-1 draw in the first leg this game will surely go down to the wire. Manchester United will hope that playing at home can give them the edge over their Spanish opponents. The Manchester based outfit may also be helped by Atlético Madrid's injury crisis, as the Spaniards may have to deal with the loss of up to 8 players.

AFL: Melbourne v Western Bulldogs

Cheltenham Festival: Gold Cup

Cheltenham Racecourse, Cheltenham

The Gold Cup, Cheltenham Festival’s most prestigious race, takes place on the 4th and final day of the event. Horses and jockeys will have to negotiate over 3 miles of ground and 22 jumps if they want to take the win at the most valuable non-handicap chase in the UK.
