This Week in Sport: 10th April − 16th April 2023

The upcoming week offers up some exciting global sporting events. On Monday, the ATP Monte-Carlo Masters continues, and Tuesday and Wednesday see huge UEFA Champions League Quarter-Final ties as Manchester City host Bayern Munich and Chelsea travel to Real Madrid. On Thursday, an elite matchup in the NHL, as the Toronto Maple Leafs face off against the New York Rangers. On Friday, Warrington Wolves and Wigan Warriors battle it out in a top of the table Super League clash.

Heading into the weekend, the prestigious Jump Racing event, The Grand National, takes place on Saturday, and reigning champions the Gujarat Titans take on the Rajasthan Royals on Sunday in the IPL.

ATP Tour: Monte-Carlo Masters Day 2

The always anticipated Monte-Carlo Masters continues this week. Novak Djokovic is widely considered the favourite to win the competition, looking to claim his third Monte-Carlo title. He will face tough competition from the likes of Jannik Sinner, Daniil Medvedev, and reigning champion, Stefanos Tsitsipas. The final of the event will take place on Sunday.

UEFA Champions League: Manchester City v Bayern Munich

City of Manchester Stadium, Manchester

A huge clash in the UEFA Champions League Quarterfinals on Tuesday, as Manchester City host Bayern Munich. Probably the standout clash of this stage of matches, both sides will be looking to take advantage in what is the first leg of the tie. Manchester City dominated against German side RB Leipzig, and Bayern proved their power, as they progressed against star-studded PSG in the previous round. There are sure to be fireworks in this one.

UEFA Champions League: Real Madrid v Chelsea

Another notable Champions League affair on Wednesday, as Chelsea travel to Real Madrid. Whilst Chelsea are struggling in the Premier League, they have managed some impressive results in this season’s European campaign, most notably defeating Borussia Dortmund in the Round of 16. Real Madrid demonstrated their power in the previous round, dominating against Liverpool across two legs.

NHL: New York Rangers v Toronto Maple Leafs

Madison Square Garden, New York

On Thursday, the battle for Playoff places continues, as the NHL regular season reaches its final few games. A notable matchup this week takes place, as the Toronto Maple Leafs head to New York to face the Rangers. Both teams are set to reach the postseason but will be looking to be in good form as the business end of the season begins.

Super League: Warrington Wolves v Wigan Warriors

A top of the table clash on Friday in Super League, as first place Warrington Wolves host second place Wigan Warriors. Although still early in the season, both sides will be looking to assert their dominance over the other. The Wolves are unbeaten so far this season, looking like the team to beat. However, although losing two matches, the Warriors remain within touching distance and will be determined to close the gap in the table.

Jump Racing: The Grand National

Aintree Racecourse, Liverpool

The prestigious Grand National takes place at the Aintree Racecourse on Saturday, with Corach Rambler and last year’s winner Noble Yeats currently amongst the favourites to win this year’s race. Always an exciting event, you won’t want to miss this one.

Indian Premier League: Gujarat Titans v Rajasthan Royals

To round out the week, reigning champions the Gujarat Titans host current league leaders, the Rajasthan Royals. Mohammed Shami, Shubman Gill, and Rashid Khan are standout players for the hosts, with the Royals boasting their own superstars, including Jos Buttler, Jason Holder, and Shimron Hetmyer.
