Event of the Day: Vuelta a España Stage 5

Our event of the day...

is stage 5 of the Vuelta a España - a 175.7km ride from Benicàssim to Alcossebre. It is a hilly stage with some wonderful scenery of beaches and mountains along the way. Starting at the Benicàssim with a stunning coastal view before meeting the Plana de Castellón and then entering Desierto de las Palmas National Park. The two major peaks of the day are the two category 2 climbs of Coll de la Bandereta and Alto de la Serratella. The final climb is the Ermita Santa Lucia near Alcossebre.

British Team Sky rider and Tour de France Champion Chris Froome is leading the race, closely followed by Spanish Quick-Step Floors rider David de La Cruz, Irish BMC Racing Team Nicolas Roche and fellow BMC teammate - American Tejay Van Garderen, who are all just 2 seconds behind. It is set up for an exciting day of cycling along with incredible views.

In the League Cup second round, Newcastle United versus Nottingham Forest and Southampton's match with Wolves are the pick of the remaining games in the round. In the Women’s Kia Super League, Surrey Stars are up against Western Storm and Lancashire Thunder face Southern Vipers. It is day 3 of the Badminton World Championships In Glasgow. The ATP Winston-Salem Open and WTA Connecticut Open each reach the fourth day in the tournament.
