Event of the day

Our event of the day is the 12th stage of the Tour de France. One of the most testing stages of the tour gets underway today, a 214.5km mountain stage. The route sees riders race from Pau to Peyragudes. There is the category 2 climb of the Col des Ares which reaches 2,615 feet, there is the gruelling category 1 climb of the Col de Menté which hits 4,426 feet and of course there is the Hors catégorie climb of Port de Balès which ascends to 5,758 feet and then the stage finishes with a category 2 climb to the ski resort of Peyagudes. British Team Sky rider Chris Froome currently holds an 18 second lead in the General classification standings over Italian Astana rider Fabio Aru. This should prove to be a gripping day of top level cycling.

Honourable mentions around the globe go to the Women's singles semi-final matches at Wimbledon. The highest remaining seed Johanna Konta takes on Venus Williams and Garbiñe Muguruza is up against Magdaléna Rybáriková. There are three T20 Blast fixtures with Middlesex welcoming Surrey to Lords, Essex take on Somerset in Chelmsford and Kent face Gloucestershire at the College Ground in Cheltenham. In Super League, Wigan Warriors host Warrington Wolves at the DW stadium. The pool stage continues at the Men's Hockey World League Semi-Finals in Johannesburg - Japan battle France, Spain face Australia, Ireland are up against Egypt and hosts South Africa take on Germany.

Whatever you are watching, enjoy.
