Event of the Day: US Open Day 1

Our event of the day...

is the first day of the 137th tennis' US Open on the outdoor hard courts of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City. The fourth and final major of the year has sadly suffered a long list of absentees in the men's singles draw with Andy Murray the latest to join a list which includes Novak Djokovic, Kei Nishikori, Milos Raonic and defending champion Stan Wawrinka. Tennis legends Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal are two of the favourites to lift the trophy. The women's singles competition is wide open due particularly to the continued absence of Serena Williams who is expecting her first child in the coming weeks.

Highlights of the first day of play include the clash between American Sam Querrey and Frenchman Gilles Simon as well as American Tennys Sandgren versus Croatian Marin Čilić in the men's singles draw. In the women's competition Russian Maria Sharapova takes on Romanian Simona Halep and Wimbledon Champion Garbiñe Muguruza from Spain battles American Varvara Lepchenko. It should be a great start to an exciting two weeks of top level tennis.

Honourable mentions...

around the globe go to day four of the second test match between England and the West Indies. The match is fantastically poised with England 2 runs ahead and with 7 wickets in hand. In Division One of the County Championship there are three matches - Essex versus Somerset at the County Ground in Chelmsford is the pick of the day. There are 10 games in MLB with the clash between the New York Yankees and the Cleveland Indians the game of the day.
