Event of the Day: US Open Day 1

The event of the day is the opening round of the 117th US Open at Erin Hills Golf course in Erin, Wisconsin. World number one Dustin Johnson is the defending champion, one of eleven former champions in the 156 player field. It is the first time the US Open is being played at Erin Hills, a course that opened in 2006. It will be the longest course in yards in the US Open's history. In recent years the US Open has sprung a few surprises with the last eight years producing eight new winners for the tournament - a list that includes Jordan Spieth, Justin Rose, Martin Kaymer and Johnson himself. Tiger Woods in 2008 the last multiple champion for this event. The stage is set for the world's best golfers to compete for one of the sport's most prestigious titles.

Honourable mentions around the globe go to the rugby league Challenge Cup quarter-final at the AJ Bell Stadium between the Salford Red Devils and Wakefield Trinity. Day one of the World Hockey League semi-finals in London sees ten teams from around the globe battle it out for the next 11 days for places in the Odisha World League Final in December. Teams include the Netherlands, Argentina, England, India and South Korea. The second ICC Champions Trophy semi-final takes place at Edgbaston as 2013 champions India clash with Bangladesh for a place in Sunday's final.  It is day four of the ATP Mercedes Cup in Stuttgart, the Ricoh Open in the Netherlands and the Aegon Open in Nottingham.
