Event of the Day: Vuelta a España Stage 11

Our event of the day...

is stage eleven of the Vuelta a España, starting in Lorca in the Murcia province of Spain and ending at the Observatorio Astronómico de Calar Alto located in the Almería province. The 187.5 km mountain stage includes two back-to-back 1st category climbs - the latter of which being one of nine summit finishes during this year’s event.

Chris Froome of Team Sky currently leads, and the four-time Tour de France winner will be hopeful of another impressive performance to bolster his overall chances of winning this year’s competition. Victory in the 72nd edition of the Vuelta a España will make him the first British winner of the three-week Grand Tour, whilst only the third cyclist to win the Tour de France and the Vuelta a España in the same year. Froome has a 36 second lead over Colombian Esteban Chaves of the Orica-Scott team and Irish rider Nicolas Roche from the BMC Racing Team is in third place, 1 minute and 5 seconds behind the leader. As we approach the half way stage of the final Grand Tour of the year, this should be an exciting day of cycling.
