Event of the Day: New Zealand v British and Irish Lions

The event of the day is the first test match in Auckland at Eden Park as the British and Irish Lions clash with the All Blacks. The Lions have played six warm-up games in the run up to the first match against New Zealand, winning four of those games. The Lions will be captained by the Irish Flanker Peter O'Mahony and have selected an exciting team with the surprise selections of Elliot Daly and Liam Williams in the back 3 with Anthony Watson. If victorious, the Lions would be the first team to beat the All Blacks at Eden Park in almost 23 years. Keiran Read returns from injury to lead New Zealand and with powerful halfbacks Beauden Barrett and Aaron Smith they intend to extend their remarkable winning record with their ability to score from anywhere. Whether the Lions can overcome the All Blacks home advantage or not, it will be an exciting opening match.

Honourable mentions around the globe go to races 5 and 6 of the 35th America’s Cup in Bermuda as Emirates Team New Zealand continue their battle against Oracle Team USA. Peter Burling’s New Zealand currently lead 3-0 in the first to seven wins series. It is the final day at Royal Ascot with the six furlong Diamond Jubilee Stakes the pick of the races. European Under-21 Championship action from Poland, sees the Czech Republic face Denmark and Italy clash with Germany. In the FIFA Confederations Cup, Mexico are up against the hosts Russia and Portugal play New Zealand. It is the start of the ICC Women’s World Cup in England - the hosts battle India at the County Ground in Derby and New Zealand take on Sri Lanka at the Bristol County Ground. It is the semi-finals at the Queen's Club Championship. There is a selection of AFL action with the West Coast Eagles hosting the Melbourne Demons in the pick of the games. In Super League, Warrington Wolves host Catalans Dragons.
