Event of the Day: England v West Indies

Our event of the day...

is day one of the opening test match in the three match test series between England and the West Indies at Edgbaston. The test match will be played using the new day-night format, in which play begins at 14:00 BST and continues until 21:00 BST. The day-night format has been used four times prior to today’s test, yet all of which have been played in ether Australia or Dubai. The format will therefore be making its debut appearance in the UK, and uncertainty lies around how the pink ball (used for day-night test matches) will react to British conditions.

However, confidence is high in the England camp, following their recent 3-1 series win over South Africa, and they will be hopeful of another series win, before travelling to Australia for the Ashes at the end of the year. The same cannot be said about the West Indies side, after consecutively losing six of their last test series - their most recent series' win was in 2014 against Bangladesh. The Windies will therefore be aiming for an impressive performance during this series if they are to end their current losing streak. It will be thrilling to see the first day-night test match in England, in front of an excited crowd at Edgbaston.

Honourable mentions...

around the globe go to the Super League Super 8s fixture between Castleford Tigers and Wakefield Trinity at the Mend-A-Hose Jungle in Castleford. Victory for the home side will secure their first finish at the top of the league in their 91-year history.

The Women’s Rugby World Cup continues in Ireland, with qualification to the semi-finals to be decided. It is day four of the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati, Ohio. There is action from four NatWest T20 Blast matches with Surrey versus Gloucestershire at the Oval the pick of the games.

Whatever you’re watching, enjoy!
