Event of the Day

Our event of the day is the 5th day of competition in the Commonwealth Games from the Gold Coast in Australia. The men’s and women’s 100m finals will be taking place at the Carrara Stadium in two of the most hotly anticipated events at the Games. Jamaica’s Yohan Blake was the favourite for the men’s title coming into the Games, and he remains so after qualifying in the fastest time (10.06). England’s Adam Gemili (10.11) and Kemar Hyman (10.10) of the Cayman Islands look to be Blake’s biggest threat heading into the final. In the women’s sprint, England’s Asha Philip (11.21) qualified in the fastest time, closely followed by Christania Williams of Jamaican (11.22) and Michelle-Lee Ahye of Trinidad and Tobago (11.25). All in all, 33 gold medals will be up for grabs across a variety of sports, including gold medal matches in squash, badminton, table tennis, bowls and shooting.

So far, the Games have been dominated by host nation Australia, who start the day with a haul of 84 medals, including 31 gold, while the English team, who are second, begin the day with a tally of 19 gold medals. The Australian’s will hope to have another successful day, with nine swimming events to be decided at the Optus Aquatic Centre where the hosts have been dominant so far, achieving 45 podium finishes. The Games has been a resounding success so far, throwing up numerous unexpected results and producing plenty of dramatic moments and we’re all set for another action packed day.

Honourable mentions around the globe go to the Indian Premier League match between Sunrisers Hyderabad and the Rajasthan Royals at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad. This is the opening game for both of these teams in this season’s competition and they will be hoping to get off to a flying start. Elsewhere in cricket, India Women play England Women in the 2nd ODI in Nagpur on England’s tour of India. In the NBA, there are some key matchups as the Denver Nuggets face the Portland Trail Blazers, the Miami Heat play the Oklahoma City Thunder and the New Orleans Pelicans travel to LA to face the Clippers. In football’s Bundesliga, RB Leipzig host Bayer Leverkusen whilst in La Liga, Villarreal meet Athletic Bilbao.

Whatever you’re watching, enjoy!
