Event of the Day: Chelsea v Manchester United

Our event of the day

is the Premier League clash between Chelsea and Manchester United at Stamford Bridge.
As part of a weekend that could have huge implications for the rest of the season, today’s game sees two of the league’s heavyweights square up for the first time this season. The onus will be on Chelsea to go out to try to win the game as they begin the day four points behind their second-placed opponents in fourth and could end the day as many as twelve points behind runaway leaders Manchester City who face Arsenal earlier today.  Although it may not be the most open game both teams know how imperative it is not to lose, making for a tense and exciting matchup.

As with every time Manchester United make the trip to Chelsea, a lot will be made about José Mourinho’s return to the Bridge where he won eight trophies across two stints as the West London club’s manager. The Manchester United manager has certainly stoked the flames before today’s game by seeming to imply Chelsea manager Antonio Conte inherited his title winning Chelsea side. As for Chelsea, they will be looking to bounce back from a damaging 3-0 mid-week defeat to Roma in the Champions League and the possible return of midfielder N’Golo Kanté would certainly provide a much-needed boost. With two of the most successful teams in recent Premier League history going head to head, it promises to be a thrilling game.

Honourable mentions
around the globe go to the first day of the second stage of the Volvo Ocean Race as the yachts travel around 7,000 nautical miles from Lisbon to Cape Town. Team Brunel currently lead the way on seven points with Turn the Tide on Plastic propping up the table with one point. In cricket, it’s the second day of England’s Ashes warm up match against the Western Australia XI at the Waca in Perth - England closed Day One on 349 runs for the loss of six wickets. There are four NHL games, including the Chicago Blackhawks versus the Montreal Canadiens at the United Center and the NFL sees eleven games, one of which is the Philadelphia Eagles versus the Denver Broncos at Lincoln Financial Field. There are ten NBA games including the San Antonio Spurs versus the Phoenix Suns at the AT&T Center while the ATP Rolex Paris Masters reaches its conclusion.
