The November Tournament, known in Japanese as the Kyushu Basho, is one of six annual professional sumo tournaments held in Japan. It takes place over 15 days at the Fukuoka Kokusai Center in Fukuoka, where top-ranked wrestlers from the Japan Sumo Association compete for the championship. Unlike team sports, sumo features individual bouts between rikishi, or wrestlers, who aim to force an opponent out of the circular ring or make any part of the opponent’s body, other than the soles of the feet, touch the ground. The tournament includes wrestlers across several divisions, with the top division, makuuchi, receiving particular attention from fans and sports media. Competitors are grouped by rank rather than by team, and their results can influence their standing in the next tournament. The November event is the final competition on the annual sumo calendar and offers a chance for wrestlers to finish the year with a strong record or contend for the Emperor’s Cup. Visitors can watch traditional ring ceremonies, closely contested matches, and the distinctive rituals that make professional sumo a major Japanese sporting event.
