Event of the Day: Warwickshire v Essex

Our event of the day...

is the first day of Warwickshire’s clash with Essex at Edgbaston, Birmingham in Division One of the County Championship. Essex are currently top of the championship having won seven of their eleven games so far this season. Meanwhile Warwickshire have struggled so far with only one win to their name. In the last round of County Championship Division One games, Essex drew their top of the table match with second-placed Lancashire after playing time was limited by rain at Old Trafford. Warwickshire, on the other hand, lost a must-win encounter with fellow strugglers Somerset by 169 runs at Edgbaston.

The last time the teams met, Essex won by an imperious innings and 164 runs at the Cloudfm County Ground in Chelmsford in June. In that match, Ravi Bopara helped Essex post 541-9 with an impressive 192. Warwickshire struggled to respond despite having ex-England internationals Jonathan Trott and Ian Bell in the side as offspinner Simon Harmer took fourteen wickets. Warwickshire will be boosted by the return of Chris Woakes from England duty, and Tom Westley returns to the fold for Essex, however Alastair Cook will not be present. The County Championship is hotting up as the season comes towards its conclusion.
