Event of the day

Our event of the day...

is the Open Championship at Royal Birkdale Golf Club in Southport, England. It is the 146th British Open Championship and the 10th Open at Royal Birkdale.

There is a starting field of 156 players and the main names to watch out for are Americans Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler, Dustin Johnson, Spaniards Jon Rahm and Sergio Garcia, Englishmen Justin Rose and Paul Casey, Hideki Matsuyama from Japan, Australian Adam Scott, Northern Irishman Rory McIlory and last year's Open champion from Sweden - Henrik Stenson.

Although a British golfer has never won the Open at Royal Birkdale there is great hope this year that Englishman Tommy Fleetwood can break that record. His rise in the golf world this past 10 months has been phenomenal, moving from 188th in the World Rankings last September to a current position of 14th. Considering Royal Birkdale is a familiar environment for the 26-year old who lives just five minutes down the road from the famous course - he will definitely be a player to keep a close eye on. It is all set-up for a thrilling four days of action with the greatest players in the world playing one of the greatest courses in a battle to get their hands on the Claret Jug.

Honourable mentions...

around the globe go to the Tour de France stage 18 from Briançon to Col d’Izoard, a 179.5km mountain stage with a hors catégorie climb to a summit finish.

It is the second semi-final of the ICC Women’s World Cup as Australia battle India at the County Ground in Derby. In Super League, Warrington Wolves host Widnes Vikings at the Halliwell Jones Stadium. There are three T20 Blast matches with Middlesex taking on Kent, Durham hosting Leicestershire and Hampshire clashing with Sussex.
