Event of the Day: Vuelta a España Stage 16

Our event of the day...

is stage 16 of the Vuelta a España, beginning at the Circuito de Navarra near Los Arcos and finishing in Logroño. As the only individual time trial in this year’s competition, stage 16 is mostly flat along its 40.2km with some relatively easy inclines around half way through. British rider Chris Froome, riding for Team Sky, currently leads the competition as he looks to become the first person to win both the Tour de France and the Vuelta España in the same calendar year since the latter was moved from April, 22 years ago. Despite coming 5th in the mountainous 15th stage on Sunday, Froome now has a lead of just over a minute over Italian Bahrain-Merida rider Vincenzo Nibali and 2 minutes more than 3rd placed Russian Ilnur Zakarin riding for Team Katusha-Alpecin. It will be interesting to see how Froome and the other riders perform after a day of rest as they cross the wine region of La Rioja towards Logroño.

Honourable mentions...

go to the set of four Cricket County Championship Division One fixtures which start today including battles at both ends of the table as Lancashire host leaders Essex and Somerset travel to bottom of the table Warwickshire. In tennis, the men's quarter-finals of the US Open get underway as Sam Querrey takes on Kevin Anderson while Pablo Carreño Busta after Carreñois up against Diego Schwartzman. In football, Wales face Moldova in Chişinău as the Republic of Ireland take on Serbia in Group D of the latest European World Cup Qualifiers. In MLB, there are 15 games today with the clash between the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Chicago Cubs the pick of the day.

Whatever you’re watching, enjoy!
