Event of the Day: Tour de France Stage 5

The event of the day is stage five of the Tour de France. The riders start in Vittel and will take on a 160.5km journey which ends in La Planche des Belles Filles - the first category one climb of the 2017 tour. This will be the third time in six years this stage has been present in the race and it is significant, as it will be a chance for general classification competitors to put down a marker. In 2012, it was the place where Chris Froome won his first Tour stage and two years later Vincenzo Nibali beat off the competition to cross the line first. With 20% gradients, do not expect to see any major time gains, but instead, significant psychological impact in favour of the victor. Anticipate competitors like Nairo Quintana and Dan Martin to try and exert some dominance on the climb as well as Chris Froome, Richie Porte and Romain Bardet. From a geographical perspective the mountain finish represents the first mountain range of the tour – Massif des Vosges. This year represents the first time all five French mountain ranges are present on the tour for 25 years – the other four being: the Alps, Pyrenees, Massif Central and Jura mountains.

Honourable mentions go to the Wimbledon day 3 where in the men's draw Andy Murray takes on Dustin Brown, Rafael Nadal comes up against Donald Young and in the Woman's draw Johanna Konta plays Donna Vekić and number two seed Simona Halep is against Beatriz Haddad Maia. Three county cricket division one games continue into day three. It is round of 16 first leg time in the Copa Libertadores. Clube Atlético Paranaense host Santos in an all Brazilian affair, C.D. Jorge Wilstermann of Bolivia play at home to Clube Atlético Mineiro of Brazil and Palmeiras of Brazil travel to Barcelona S.C. of Ecudaor.

Whatever you are watching, enjoy!
