This Week in Sport: 2nd February − 8th February 2026

Louis Bielle-Bially in action for France Rugby

February begins with an absolutely packed week of sport. On Monday, the Colorado Avalanche host the Detroit Red Wings in the NHL. On Tuesday, Arsenal take on Chelsea in the second leg of their Carabao Cup Semi-final. That’s followed by a clash in the NBA between the San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday. On Thursday, the Six Nations begins with France facing Ireland, and Friday marks the official opening of the Winter Olympics.

There is also plenty to enjoy at the weekend. On Saturday, the T20 World Cup gets underway, and on Sunday, the New England Patriots take on the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl LX.

NHL: Colorado Avalanche v Detroit Red Wings

Monday 2nd February 2:00AM GMT (3rd)/7:00PM Local

Ball Arena, Denver

The Colorado Avalanche host the Detroit Red Wings in the NHL at Ball Arena in Denver. These two high-flying sides meet for the second time in three days as the league’s Olympic break looms. Colorado will look to build on the 5-0 drubbing they handed to Detroit on Saturday, which moved the Avalanche to a 14-0-1 record against the Red Wings in their last 15 meetings. Furthermore, Nathan MacKinnon will look to add to his league-leading goal tally after netting two against the Red Wings to become the season’s first 40-goal scorer. For Detroit, a turnaround performance will be vital. They now find themselves on a three-game losing streak and have ceded first place in the Atlantic Division to the Tampa Bay Lightning. In a divisional race where first and fifth are separated by just seven points, Detroit cannot afford to lose any more ground. NHL action continues until Thursday before the league formally pauses for the Winter Olympics.

Carabao Cup: Arsenal v Chelsea

Tuesday 3rd February 8:00PM GMT/8:00PM Local

Emirates Stadium, London

Arsenal host Chelsea in the second leg of their Carabao Cup Semi-final at the Emirates Stadium in London. Arsenal enter this clash with a 3-2 lead on aggregate with a place in the Final on the line. Arsenal seem unstoppable heading into this match, with just three losses across all competitions this season. However, the Gunners have not reached the Carabao Cup Final since 2018 and will need to maintain their composure if they want to lock in their first chance at silverware this season. Meanwhile, Chelsea will enter this vital second leg ready to push their opponents all the way. The first leg loss is the only blemish on the record of new manager Liam Rosenior, who has won his other six games since taking over at Stamford Bridge. With 19 goals in seven games, the Blues have found some offensive form. Summer signing João Pedro seems to be one of the biggest beneficiaries of the new regime, having found the net five times already under Rosenior. If Chelsea can overcome the one-goal deficit, they will make their third Carabao Cup Final in the last five years. The winner of this clash will face either defending champions Newcastle United or eight-time winners Manchester City in next month’s Final. City take a 2-0 lead over the Magpies into Wednesday’s second leg.

NBA: San Antonio Spurs v Oklahoma City Thunder

Wednesday 4th February 2:30AM GMT (5th)/8:30PM Local

Frost Bank Center, San Antonio

The San Antonio Spurs host the Oklahoma City Thunder in the NBA at Frost Bank Arena in San Antonio. These two sides meet for the fifth and final time this season, barring a rematch in the Playoffs come the summer. The Thunder continue to rule the Western Conference, led by yet another MVP-calibre season from Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. However, the Spurs find themselves in a much more intriguing situation. The gap between second and seventh is just 4.5 games, and every game will be vital if the Spurs want to end the season as one of the West’s top Playoff seeds. While the Spurs won the first three meetings of the season with the Thunder, OKC bounced back in dominant fashion in mid-January with a 119-98 victory. The question remains as to whether Victor Wembanyama, Stephon Castle, and the rest of the Spurs’ hungry young team can return to their impressive early-season form over the Thunder, or whether momentum will continue trending towards the defending champions.

Six Nations: France v Ireland

Thursday 5th February 8:10PM GMT/9:10PM Local

Stade de France, Saint-Denis

France host Ireland in the opening match of the Six Nations at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis. Defending champions France look for their first win on a path to the nation’s first Six Nations title defence since 2007. While Les Blues return beloved captain Antoine Dupont to the squad, questions remain about France’s form given other absences - some intentional, others simply tragic. Grégory Alldritt, Damian Penaud, and Gaël Fickou are all victims of Fabien Galthié’s ruthless squad management, while regular starter Uini Atonio announced his abrupt retirement last week after suffering a heart attack. While a kind schedule and a wealth of exciting young talent keep France as favourites, many see this as a do-or-die tournament ahead of next year’s World Cup. Meanwhile, Ireland, who finished third in 2025, enter this year’s tournament in a slight state of disarray. Mixed results in the Autumn Internationals, a plethora of key absences, and a mild feeling of stagnation, all point to this being a career-defining tournament for Andy Farrell. What’s more, while Ireland won their last match in France in 2024, they have not won at the Stade de France since 2018, adding to the opening game pressure. Elsewhere, the rest of the Six Nations’ opening weekend sees Scotland travel to Italy and England host Wales.

Winter Olympics: Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony

Friday 6th February 7:00PM GMT/8:00PM Local

San Siro, Milan

The Winter Olympics officially begin with the Opening Ceremony at the San Siro in Milan. The Winter Olympics return to Italy for the first time since 2006, with athletes from 93 nations expected to take part. Plenty of intriguing story-lines will unfold over 19 days of competition, including the United States’ golden generation of figure skaters, the return of NHL players to men’s ice hockey, must-see battles in the alpine skiing events, and the host nation’s undefeated curling duo. Ski mountaineering features as the Games’ only debut sport, while Benin, Guinea-Bissau, and the United Arab Emirates all send athletes to the Winter Olympics for the first time. Meanwhile, as hosts, Italy will be looking to beat their best-ever medal tally of 20, which they achieved at the 1994 games in Norway. The medals will start to come thick and fast at the XXV Winter Olympic Games, with 13 medal events set for Saturday and Sunday alone.

T20 World Cup: T20 World Cup Day 1

Saturday 7th 5:30AM GMT/11:00AM Local

India and Sri Lanka

The T20 World Cup begins at sites across India and Sri Lanka. On the opening day of the tournament, the Netherlands face Pakistan, Scotland take on the West Indies, and hosts India play the United States. As defending champions and pre-tournament favourites, India will attempt to mount the competition’s first-ever title defence. Meanwhile, while Australia are a perennial title contender at any white-ball competition, they will need to bounce back from a disappointing warm-up series against Pakistan. Elsewhere, Harry Brook’s first tournament as England captain will come with lofty expectations, especially with the team looking to move on quickly from a disastrous Ashes tour. Other cricketing powerhouses, such as New Zealand and South Africa, will be eager to finally win a white-ball tournament for the first time. In the week leading up to the first day of the tournament, many of the participating nations will play warm-up matches to get a feel for some of the host pitches. Who will lift the trophy on 8th March?

Super Bowl LX: New England Patriots v Seattle Seahawks

Sunday 8th February 11:30PM GMT/3:30PM Local

Levi’s Stadium, Santa Clara

Super Bowl LX takes place at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, with the New England Patriots taking on the Seattle Seahawks. This rematch of Super Bowl XLIX pits two of 2025’s best teams against one another. Sophomore quarterback Drake Maye leads the Patriots back to the Super Bowl for their first time since February 2019 behind a potent running attack and a strong connection with receiver Stefon Diggs. However, they will have to overcome the Seahawks defence, which has been a highlight of this well-rounded Seattle team. Meanwhile, Sam Darnold has gone from being considered a draft bust to a Super Bowl quarterback, since joining Seattle ahead of this season. Darnold has a wealth of options at his disposal, from league-leading receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba to 1000-yard rusher Kenneth Walker III, but it’s been his own play that has gained recent headlines. This is Seattle’s first Super Bowl since that fateful night against the Patriots 11 years ago where they lost 28-24 in the dying moments, and they will be eager to cap their fantastic season by lifting their second Lombardi Trophy.
