This Week in Sport: 1st August − 7th August 2022

On Monday and Tuesday, competition continues at the Commonwealth Games with action in the pool and in the athletics. On Wednesday, the first match of the men’s Hundred takes place at the Rose Bowl and will see Southern Brave take on Welsh Fire.

Later in the week on Thursday, the Women’s British Open kicks off at Muirfield for the first time in history. The following day the Premier League Season kicks off as Crystal Palace play host to Arsenal in the first game of the season. 

There is no shortage of interesting sport taking place at the weekend either. On Saturday South Africa go head-to-head with New Zealand in the Rugby Championship and on Sunday MotoGP heads to Silverstone for round 12 of their enthralling season.

 

Commonwealth Games: Swimming and Para Swimming

Monday 1st August 9:30AM GMT/10:30AM Local Time

Sandwell Aquatics Centre, Smethwick

After an incredible opening ceremony at Alexander Stadium last week, competition continues at the Commonwealth Games with athletes taking to the pool. Swimmers will compete in the men’s 50m breaststroke, women’s 200m individual medley and women’s 100m freestyle amongst other events.

Commonwealth Games: Athletics and Para Athletics

Tuesday 2nd August 9AM GMT/10AM Local Time

Alexander Stadium, Birmingham

There is also an abundance of exciting athletics action taking place on Tuesday as the stadium based Athletics part of the Games begins. The first round of the men’s and women’s 100m heats will take place, as well as the women's Pole Vault Final, men's 10,000m Final and the women’s 800m first round.

The Hundred: Southern Brave v Welsh Fire

Wednesday 3rd August 6PM GMT/7PM Local Time

The Rose Bowl, Southampton

Wednesday marks the start of the Hundred and sees last year’s champions Southern Brave take on Welsh Fire at the Rose Bowl. Can Southern Brave get their campaign for a second consecutive title off to a strong start, or will Welsh fire cause an upset?

European and LPGA Tour: Women’s British Open

Thursday 4th August 5AM GMT/6AM Local Time

Muirfield, Gullane

The Women’s British Open tees off on Thursday at the historic Muirfield course. This is the first time the tournament will take place at Muirfield, and it will be an exciting week for golf fans. Rookie, Ayaka Furue, will be coming into the Open with confidence after being crowned champion at the Scottish Open, clinching her first LPGA title.

Premier League: Crystal Palace v Arsenal

Friday 5th August 7PM GMT/8PM Local Time

Selhurst Park, London

Crystal Palace play host to Arsenal in the first game of this year’s premier League season. Fans will be immensely excited to see how their respective new line ups perform after the summer break. After mixed seasons for both teams last year, they will be hoping they can start their season’s as they mean to go on.

The Rugby Championship: South Africa v New Zealand

After mixed results in their series against Wales and Ireland, South Africa and New Zealand will go up against one another in the first game of the Rugby Championship. The teams enjoy an intense rivalry and fans will be desperate to see who comes out on top.

Silverstone Circuit, Towcester

Riders and teams in the world’s premier motorbike racing formula head to the fast and flowing Silverstone for round 12 of the MotoGP season. With the season past the halfway point, things are hotting up at the top of the standings. With only 21 points separating the top 2, every points counts at this stage of the championship.
