This Week in Sport: 18th March − 24th March 2024

There are some exciting sporting events coming up this week around the globe. The Golden State Warriors take on the New York Knicks in the NBA on Monday, Tuesday sees Benfica Women face Lyon Féminin in the UEFA Women’s Champions League, and the MLB season gets underway on Wednesday, as the San Diego Padres go head-to-head with the Los Angeles Dodgers. On Thursday, the Boston Bruins face the New York Rangers in the NHL, and the Indian Premier League begins Friday, with the Chennai Super Kings taking on the Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

Heading into the weekend, England face Brazil in an international football friendly, and Formula 1 action rounds out the week with the Australian Grand Prix on Sunday.

NBA: Golden State Warriors v New York Knicks

Monday will see exciting NBA action, as the Golden State Warriors face the New York Knicks at the Chase Center in San Francisco. The Warriors are having a tough season, sitting ninth in the Western Conference on a record of 35-31, whilst their opponents are having a better season, sitting fourth in the Eastern Conference with 40-27. Watch out for Steph Curry for the Warriors and Jalen Brunson for the Knicks, who are likely to be big influences on this game.

UEFA Women's Champions League: Benfica Women v Lyon Féminin

On Tuesday, the UEFA Women’s Champions League Quarterfinals get underway, and Benfica Women will host eight-time Champions Lyon Fémini at the Estádio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica in the first leg of their matchup. Benfica finished second in their group behind Barcelona to progress to this stage, whilst Lyon finished first in their group without losing a game.

MLB: San Diego Padres v Los Angeles Dodgers

The new MLB season gets underway on Wednesday with a special two-game series between the San Diego Padres and the Los Angeles Dodgers at the Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul. The season begins a week later for the rest of the field. The Texas Rangers won the 2023 World Series and open their new campaign against the Chicago Cubs on 28th March.

NHL: Boston Bruins v New York Rangers

TD Garden, Boston

On Thursday, the Boston Bruins face the New York Rangers in an Eastern Conference clash in the NHL at TD Garden. The Bruins currently sit top of the Atlantic Division with a record of 40-14-15, whilst the Rangers sit top of the Metropolitan Division with a record of 45-19-5, so this is sure to be a high-quality affair.

Indian Premier League: Chennai Super Kings v Royal Challengers Bengaluru

M.A. Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai

On Friday, the Indian Premier League, India’s domestic T20 competition, gets underway for another season. The opening game will see the 2023 Champions, the Chennai Super Kings, host the Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium. The title win for the Super Kings in 2023 was their fifth overall, equalling the record number of titles in the competition with the Mumbai Indians.

Internationals (Football): England v Brazil

Wembley Stadium, London

Saturday will see a highly anticipated international friendly between England and Brazil at Wembley Stadium. Both sides will be looking to put in strong performances in the build-up to their respective summer tournaments. England head to Germany for the Euros, whilst Brazil head to the United States for the Copa América. This game will perhaps be an early indicator of both sides chances of success in these tournaments.

Formula 1: Australian Grand Prix

Melbourne Grand Prix Circuit, Albert Park

Formula 1 action will round out the week, with the Australian Grand Prix on Sunday at the Melbourne Grand Prix Circuit in Albert Park. The new season has seen Max Verstappen win the first two races, continuing his and Red Bull’s form from the last three seasons, and he will hope to continue his strong performances throughout the season to secure his fourth consecutive title in the Drivers’ Championship.
