Event of the Day: European Championships Swimming Day 6

Our event of the day is day 6 of the European Swimming Championships in Glasgow. The Tollcross International Swimming Centre will host no less than six medal events today. They start with the men’s 800m freestyle followed by the women's 100m freestyle and then the men’s 50m breaststroke. After a short break the competition moves on to the final three medal races which are the men's 200m backstroke, the women’s 200m individual medley and the day ends with the mixed 4 x 100m freestyle relay. On the topic of mixed relays, a new record was set by the Great Britain team of Adam Peaty, Freya Anderson, James Guy and Georgia Davies in their gold medal victory in the mixed 4 x 100m medley relay. The team broke the European Record in an incredible effort with a time of three minutes 40.18 seconds.

The gold medal races today will be fascinating to watch as we saw Ukrainian Mykhailo Romanchuk qualify fastest in the men’s 800m freestyle. Italian Gregorio Paltrinieri and Croatian Marin Mogić will look to upset the event with a victory or at least get on the podium. In the 50m breaststroke final world record holder Adam Peaty will look to secure another gold medal with Fabio Scozzoli and Serbian Caba Sildji on either side of the Brit. Olympic gold medallist and record holder, “The Iron Lady” Katinka Hosszú will be motivated to collect another win after qualifying second behind Great Britain’s 22 year old hopeful, Siobhan-Marie O’Connor. This should turn out to be a titanic battle in the 200m individual medley final. We are all set for an incredible day of aquatic excellence!

Honourable mentions around the globe go to the Rogers Cup taking place in Montreal and Toronto. In the WTA event, France's Alizé Cornet will face up with up with German Angelique Kerber in the round of 32. In the ATP event, Grand Slam Winner Novak Djokovic is up against Peter Polansky and Rafael Nadal plays Benôit Paire. In Cricket the South African Proteas will try to take a step closer to an ODI white wash of Sri Lanka as they head into the 4th ODI 3 - 0 up. Scottish Premier League champions Celtic will take on Greek winners AEK Athens as the two teams battle it out to try and qualify for the UEFA Champions League. In Major League Baseball, the New York Yankees will be at Guaranteed Rate Field looking to pick themselves up against the Chicago White Sox after a difficult series loss to the Red Sox last week. Day 3 of the European Athletics Championships continues in Berlin with the women's 800m semi-finals and the men's 200m semi-finals as two exciting races. The Women’s Cricket Super League sees the most successful team, the Southern Vipers, up against the Yorkshire Diamonds at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton.
