Event of the Day: Day 1 of the PGA Championship

Our event of the day is the opening day of the PGA Championship near to St. Louis, Missouri. The season's last major will draw crowds from around the world to the stunning Bellerive Golf Course. Contenders will be teeing up to compete for the top share of the competitions' $10,500,00.00 purse. Teeing off first will be Englishman Eddie Pepperell who finished in tied 6th position alongside the legendary Tiger Woods at Carnoustie at the Open. Woods has not won a tournament since 2013 but has been consistent this year with five top 10 finishes and will hope to be in the mix in Missouri. World number 1 and favourite Dustin Johnson will look to improve after missing the cut at the Open. This year’s money leader and second in the world rankings, reigning PGA Champion, Justin Thomas from America, will have a point to prove as he too missed the cut at Carnoustie. The most recent major winner, Italy’s Francesco Molinari will hope to be a contender again after his two stroke victory at the Open.

Two other potential winners coming into the fourth major with some good momentum are Justin Rose and Rory McIlroy who finished joint 2nd at the last major. England’s Justin Rose is in 3rd place in the rankings and could be one to watch out for as he seeks to win his second major championship after his 2013 U.S. Open victory. Four-time major champion Rory McIlroy has now finished in the top 5 in two of this years' first three majors and will look to add to his 2012 13 under par victory at Kiawah Island. World number 4 Brooks Koepka will look to replicate his U.S. Open form from earlier in the year, after winning the competition in consecutive years, the first to do so since Curtis Strange in 1988 and 1989. The competition will be stiff at the beautiful Bellerive Golf Course as Justin Thomas attempts to defend his PGA Championship crown following his 2017 victory at the Quail Hollow Club.

Honourable mentions around the globe go to the 2nd Test match between England and India at the world famous Lord’s Cricket Ground. England are 1 – 0 up after the first test at Edgbaston. England secured a thrilling 31 run victory that will live long in the memory. England however will be without the talismanic Ben Stokes who starred in the first Test because he is unavailable due to a court case. India will look to reverse their fortunes, led by the incredible Virat Kohli who is in fine form currently with the bat. In other golf it is day 2 of the European Team Championships at the famous Gleneagles golf course. In UEFA Europa League action, Steven Gerrard leads Rangers against Maribor at Ibrox. The NRL will feature a hard hitting match between the Cowboys and the Broncos at 1300SMILES Stadium. In the Women’s Cricket Super League top placed Loughborough Lightning are hosted by fourth placed Surrey Stars. The 2018 Sailing World Championshipscontinues as they host all 10 Olympic sailing classes as well as Kitesurfing at Aarhus Bay in Denmark.
