Event of the Day: State of Origin Game 1

The event of the day is the first match of the 2017 State of Origin Series at the Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane as the Queensland Maroons host the New South Wales Blues. The series is one of the highlights of the Australian sporting calendar, where the top NRL players represent the state where they played their first senior level Rugby League game. Last year the Maroons won the series 2-1 and have won 10 of the last 11 series. The Blues are searching for their first series' win since 2014, the year when they snapped Queensland's record eight year winning streak.

Honourable mentions around the globe go to Game 2 of the NHL Stanley Cup Finals between the Nashville Predators and the Pittsburgh Penguins. The defending champion Penguins won an exciting opening game 5-3 as they aim to become the first team to win the Stanley Cup back to back this century. The French Open continues with the start of the second round of singles matches. The Louis Vuitton America’s Cup Qualifiers will see Japan face France and USA as well as seeing Great Britain face France and New Zealand. However, the first State of Origin battle in Brisbane will be an intriguing and thrilling watch. Enjoy.
