Event of the Day: Rogers Cup

Our event of the day...

is the Rogers Cup in Canada. The event incorporates both the ATP and WTA tours - it is considered one of the most prestigious tournaments in the tennis calendar after the four Grand Slams. In action today in Montreal – where the men’s tournament takes place – will be Roger Federer, playing his first competitive match since his 19th Grand Slam triumph at Wimbledon last month. He will be facing home hope Peter Polansky who beat Vasek Pospisil in the all-Canadian first round encounter.

In the women’s event in Toronto, the Wimbledon Champion Garbiñe Muguruza will face off against the Belgian Kirsten Flipkens who came through qualifying and the first round to reach this round of 32 match.

Honourable mentions...

around the globe go to day 6 of the IAAF World Athletics Championships in London. A particular highlight is likely to be the final of the Women’s 400m, where the expected showdown between Allyson Felix and Olympic champion Shaunae Miller-Uibo could yet be hijacked by Salwa Eid Naser, the Bahraini breakout star who beat Felix in their semi-final. Other finals tonight include the men’s 400m hurdles and the women’s shot put.

Also taking place today will be the first day of the Women’s Rugby World Cup in Ireland and stage 3 of the Binckbank Cycling Tour in the Netherlands and Belgium.
