Event of the Day: Wimbledon Day 1
The event of the day is the first day of the 131st Wimbledon Tennis Championships - a fortnight of grand slam tennis graces SW19. World number one Andy Murray is aiming to retain his crown and win his third Wimbledon title despite some doubts about his form and fitness. Popular past champions Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal are looking forward to their opportunity and our amongst the favourites to claim the title again. Murray kicks-off the action on centre court with a match against Alexander Bublika from Kazakhstan whilst Nadal's first day match on Court One is against John Millman from Australia. In the women’s draw the tournament is wide open with Serena Williams away expecting a baby. Petra Kvitova and Karolina Pliskova are considered favourites to be champion but there will be high hopes for the local Johanna Konta to have a good run. Day one highlights include Kvitova's clash with Johanna Larsson on Centre Court and Konta's match with Su-Wei Hsieh on Court One. With 32 men’s and 32 women’s singles matches it will be an exciting opening day of the Championships.
Honourable mentions around the globe go to the second day of the UEFA European Under-19 Championship in Georgia. England take on Bulgaria at the Mikheil Meskhi Stadium and Germany clash with the Netherlands at the David Petriashvili Stadium. It is stage three of the Tour de France which takes off from Verviers in Belgium then goes through Luxembourg before finishing in Longwy, France. Three County Championship Division One games begin today with Surrey taking on Hampshire at the Oval, Warwickshire hosting Middlesex at Edgbaston and Yorkshire welcoming Somerset to North Marine Road in Scarborough.
