Event of the Day: Mexican Open Day 1

Our event of the day is the ATP World Tour and WTA Tour Abierto Mexicano Telcel in Acapulco. The Mexican Open starts today and goes until Saturday and is one of 13 ATP World Tour 500 series tournaments as well as a popular event on the WTA Tour. Since 2014 it has been played on blue hard courts but for the previous  20 years it was a clay court tournament. Acapulco will celebrate its 25th anniversary as an ATP tournament with 6 players from the Top 10 of the world rankings taking part: Spaniard Rafael Nadal (No. 2 in the ATP rankings), German Alexander Zverev (No.5), Austrian Dominic Thiem (No.6), American Jack Sock (No.8), South African Kevin Anderson (No.9) and Argentinian Juan Martin del Potro (No.10). It is the 18th year as a WTA event and the number one seed is 2017 US Open Champion, American Sloane Stephens.

Highlights on Day 1 include the clash between Anderson and Moldovan Radu Albot in the men’s singles, Daria Gavrilova from Australia and Madison Brengle from USA in the women’s singles and the Bryan brothers versus Fabrice Martin and Franko Skugor in the men’s doubles. It should be a great start to an exciting week of tennis.

Honourable mentions around the globe go to the big NHL clash between the Tampa Bay Lighting and the Toronto Maple Leafs at Amalie Arena in Tampa. The teams hold the top two spots in the Eastern Conference and are both expected to go far into the playoffs this season. In the NBA, the Utah Jazz host the Houston Rockets at the Vivint Smart Home Arena in Salt Lake City. In the Bundesliga, Borussia Dortmund take on FC Augsburg at Signal Iduna Park in Dortmund. It’s the first day of the 2018 snooker Welsh Open at Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff.

Whatever you’re watching, enjoy!
