Event of the Day: AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am Day 1

Our event of the day is the opening day of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am golf tournament at Pebble Beach, California. Until Sunday, 156 professional and 156 amateur golfers will compete on three different courses: Pebble Beach Golf Links, Spyglass Hill Golf Course and Monterey Peninsula Country Club. Since the first edition in 1937, the Americans have dominated the tournament – only Bruce Crampton (1965) and Brett Ogle (1993), both from Australia, and Vijay Singh from Fiji in 2004 have interrupted the American dominance of the event.
This year’s lineup includes the current  top three players in the world: world number one and winner of back-to-back titles, in 2009 and 2010, Dustin Johnson; Spaniard Jon Rahm who was victorious at the CareerBuilder Challenge event in January; and last season’s winner, Jordan Spieth. Mark O’Meara holds the record for most triumphs at the tournament with five wins from 1985 to 1997. Another home competitor, Phil Mickelson, will once again try and equal this achievement, twenty years from his first victory. He has four triumphs (1998, 2005, 2007 and 2012), like the first winner of the event back in 1937, Sam Snead. Winner of four Majors, Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland who’s having a strong comeback this season following a runner-up finish at Omega Dubai Desert Classic, is set to make his first appearance at Pebble Beach. It should be an exciting four days of golf ahead.

Honourable mentions around the globe go to the first day of the 2nd Test between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpa, Dhaka. In the first Test in Chittagong, Bangladesh escaped with a draw mainly thanks to batsman Mominul Haque who had 176 runs in the first innings and 105 runs in the second. It’s Day 1 of the ISPS Handa World Super 6 Perth at the Lake Karrinyup Country Club in Perth. It’s the fourth day of the Open Sud de France at the Arena Montpellier in Montpellier; and Day 4 of the Ecuador Open in Quito. In the Eredivisie, Feyenoord take on Groningen at Roterdam’s De Kuip. In the Copa del Rey, Valencia host Barcelona in the second leg of their semi-final at the Estadio de Mestalla in Valencia. In the Super League, Leeds Rhinos face Hull Kingston Rovers at Elland Road in Leeds. In the NBA, the Washington Wizards match up with the Boston Celtics at the Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C.. In the NHL, there’s a duel between the St. Louis Blues and the Colorado Avalanche at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis; whilst the San Jose Sharks meet the Vegas Golden Knights at the SAP Center in San Jose.
