Event of the Day: South Africa versus Australia

Our event of the day is the second day of the 3rd match of the Test series between South Africa and Australia at Newlands in Cape Town. The four-Test series of the Australia tour of South Africa is tied at 1-1 following the first two Tests – the visitors took advantage in Durban, before the home side levelled in Port Elizabeth, winning by six wickets eleven days ago. South Africa won the toss for the first time in the series and elected to bat at the start of the all-important third Test yesterday. Batsman Dean Elgar put in an impressive performance, scoring 121 off 253 balls, not out, and reached the milestone of 3,000 runs in Test cricket in the process. Star man, AB de Villiers, also added a fifty for the Proteas who were 220 for 2 at one point.
However the tide turned when fast bowler Pat Cummins stepped in to revive the Aussies in the afternoon. He took four wickets for 64 runs and at the end of the day, South Africa were 266 for 8 after 87 overs. It could have been very different for South Africa, but the hosts failed to capitalize on Elgar’s century and Cummins managed to change the course of the match with his impressive bowling. One thing is for certain though - we face another dramatic day of cricket in Cape Town today.
