Event of the Day: Miami Open Day 5

Our event of the day is Day 4 of the ATP World Tour and Day 5 of the WTA World Tour Miami Open at the Tennis Center at Crandon Park in Key Biscayne, Florida. Today, the contest continues in men’s and women’s singles and doubles competitions. In the men’s singles 2nd Round, reigning champion Roger Federer starts his title defence against Thanasi Kokkinakis from Australia. The world number one from Switzerland suffered his first defeat of the season on Sunday, losing the Indian Wells final to Juan Martín del Potro in three sets. Now he is aiming for his fourth Miami Open title – the record for most tournament wins is shared by American Andre Agassi and Serbian Novak Djokovic, who have both won the title six times. Number four seed, Alexander Zverev of Germany, takes on the Russian Daniil Medvedev.
In the women’s singles 3rd Round, Romanian world number one Simona Halep faces Agnieszka Radwańska from Poland, who was champion in 2012. Triple champion Victória Azárenka from Belarus (winner in 2009, 2011 and 2016) goes head-to-head with Latvian Anastasija Sevastova. Home favourite Serena Williams who has won the trophy a stunning eight times, has been beaten in the opening round by newly-crowned Indian Wells champion Naomi Osaka (who has since been knocked out too). In the men’s doubles first round, brothers Bob and Mike Bryan, four-time winners in Miami, clash with Marcus Daniell and Dominic Inglot. The defending champions in the women’s doubles tournament, Gabriela Dabrowski and Xu Yifan will play against the pair of Elise Mertens and Demi Schuurs. It’s another action-packed day at Crandon Park Tennis Center.

Honourable mentions around the globe go to the 2018 Boat Race along the River Thames in England. The traditional rowing race between the universities of Oxford and Cambridge will be the third occasion in history where the men’s, women’s and both reserves’ races are all held on the same day. It’s the third day of the 3rd match of the Test series between South Africa and Australia at Newlands in Cape Town, and also the third day of the 1st Test between New Zealand and England at Eden Park in Auckland. In the NBA, the Houston Rockets come up against the New Orleans Pelicans at the Toyota Center in Houston. It’s Day 4 of the WGC Dell Technologies tournament at the Austin Country Club. The new Formula 1 season starts with qualification for the Australian Grand Prix at the Albert Park Circuit in Melbourne. In the NHL, there’s the clash between the Minnesota Wild and the Nashville Predators at the Xcel Energy Center in Saint-Paul; whilst the Colorado Avalanche play the Vegas Golden Knights at the Pepsi Center in Denver, in two big Western Conference fixtures.
