Event of the Day: Wales versus Scotland

Our event of the day is the Six Nations match between Wales and Scotland at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff. Up until the middle of March, the national rugby union teams of England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, France and Italy will fight for the title of the 19th edition of the Six Nations Championship. Including the preceding editions of the tournament, Home Nations and Five Nations Championships, England are the most successful nation with 38 titles (recording 28 outright wins and 10 shared victories), Wales have 38 triumphs as well, but 26 were outright and 12 were shared. The English side also has the record of six titles in the Six Nations era, since 2000, and are the reigning champions following their back-to-back victories in 2016 and 2017.
Scotland have 24 overall titles (15 outright and nine shared), but their last came in the final edition of the Five Nations in 1999. Wales on the other hand, have four Six Nations trophies, having won their last titles back to back in 2012 and 2013. Last season, the Scots beat the Welsh 29-13 at home, their first triumph over their rival since 2007 and after nine straight defeats. The hosts are unbeaten against Scotland in eight home matches in a row, last losing 27-22 in 2002. The visitors’ fullback Stuart Hogg was voted Player of the Championship in the last two editions and will be a player to watch closely today. Wales’ Hadleigh Parks debuted at inside-centre against South Africa in December and scored two tries in a 24-22 triumph to earn the man of the match award. It is all set-up to be a gripping start to the Six Nations at the Principality Stadium.
