Event of the Day: Liverpool v Manchester United

Our event of the day...

is Liverpool versus Manchester United in the Premier League. This is arguably one of the biggest fixtures of the season as two heavyweights of English football go head to head at Anfield. While both clubs are huge names in the Premier League, they have contrasting form coming into today’s match. Liverpool have just one win in their last seven games in all competitions while Manchester United are unbeaten in the Premier League this season, winning six and drawing one after finding the net twenty-one times. This fixture has produced sixteen red cards in total, and the game today promises to be a fiery mix of passion and quality.

An aspect of the game that has received a lot of attention in the build-up is Liverpool’s defence. Having leaked twelve goals in the league already this season (only West Ham and Crystal Palace have conceded more goals) many people expect Manchester United to find a way through. Having a striker like Romelu Lukaku, with seven goals in seven premier league games this season, only makes this more likely. Liverpool should also pose a threat going forward - despite Sadio Mané being side-lined for up to six weeks the likes of Mohamed Salah and Philippe Coutinho provide enough pace and creativity to trouble most defences. With the potential for around nine hundred million people watching this game world-wide, hopefully it will live up to the hype as we anticipate a thrilling match between these two great clubs.

Honourable mentions...

around the globe go to the European Rugby Champions Cup as three-time winners Leinster host big-spending Montpellier at the RDS Arena in Dublin.

It’s the penultimate days of the US PGA Tour Champions SAS Championship at Prestonwood Country Club and the PGA European Tour Italian Open at Golf Club Milano in Italy. It’s also semi-finals day of the  ATP Shanghai Masters as Rafael Nadal takes on Marin Čilić while Roger Federer plays Juan Martín del Potro. In boxing, George Groves faces Jamie Cox at the SSE Arena Wembley in a  WBA Super-Middleweight title fight which is also part of the World Boxing Super Series. The MLB Championship Series continue with the Houston Astros playing the New York Yankees at Minute Maid Park in the American League while the Los Angeles Dodgers host the Chicago Cubs at Dodger Stadium in the National League. There are fourteen NHL fixtures, including the Montreal Canadiens hosting the Toronto Maple Leafs at Centre Bell.

Whatever you’re watching, enjoy!
