Event of the Day: French Open Day 10

Our event of the day is Day 10 of the French Open at Roland Garros. After four rounds of play, the first day of the Quarter Finals will take centre stage today. One of the most anticipated matches of the tournament was to take place between Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova on Monday. Much to the dismay of the tennis world, Williams had to withdraw from the tournament prior to the match due to a pectoral injury. Serena was playing in her first major tournament since giving birth to her daughter in 2017 and understandably expressed disappointment in having to pull out. Her withdrawal means Sharapova will move onto the quarter-finals in her bid for a third French Open title. Today’s women’s singles play will feature American Sloane Stephens pitted against Russian Daria Kasatkina. Fellow American Madison Keys will play Yulia Putintseva from Kazakhstan.

In the Men’s Singles, the second ranked Alexander Zverev faces seventh ranked Dominic Thiem. Zverev has had a tough road to the quarter finals. His last three matches have each lasted 5 sets and he has been forced to battle back from two sets to one down in each one of them. Thiem, who is known to be one of the fittest players in Tennis, may have the upper hand as he looks to outlast Zverev. Novak Djokovic will be making his 12th appearance in the French Open Quarter Finals against 72nd ranked Italian Marco Cecchinato. The 25 year old Cecchinato will try to upset the 20th ranked Djokovic, who will be highly favoured in this match. The past days have been filled with amazing tennis play on the clay courts at Roland Garros, today's Quarter Finals promise more of the same.

Honourable mentions around the globe go the International Football Friendly being played between Russia and Turkey. The Russians will host the Turkish squad at Arena CSKA in Moscow for their final pre-World Cup warmup game. Winless in six straight matches, Russia will look to return to form and put together a strong performance. As host nation of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, the pressure will be on Russia to perform in front of their home fans and give them hope heading into the tournament. In cricket, Afghanistan continues their Tour with the 2nd Match of their three game T20 series against Bangladesh. The match is being played at Rajiv Ghandi International Cricket Stadium in Dehradun. Elsewhere in cricket, Lancashire play Yorkshire in a Royal London One Day Cup match at Old Trafford. The Toronto Blue Jays host their American League East rival New York Yankees in Major League Baseball action at Rogers Centre.

Whatever you’re watching, enjoy!
