Event of the Day: England versus Australia

Our event of the day is the third One Day International cricket match between England and Australia at Trent Bridge in Nottingham. With a 2-0 lead, England will be looking to contain the visitors and sew-up the series. They seem to have put the humiliation of their surprising loss to Scotland (a week ago) behind them and are determined to win the first three games of this ODI-series against Australia. Australia’s loss in the second match signifies England’s twelfth win in their last sixteen ODIs.

On the other hand, Australia will be looking to show a big improvement and address the weaknesses in their battling unit. Their 38-run loss to England in the second ODI match in Cardiff, sees them drop to 6th position in the world ODI rankings. The second match saw England reach a total of 342 with impressive performances from Jos Buttler, with 91 not out, and Jason Roy with 120. Australia’s Shaun Marsh and Ashton Ager (132 and 46) led a strong chase but their team fell short and were all out for 304. Chris Woakes and Ben Stokes remain out injured for England but Eoin Morgan is due to return. Australia are hopeful that Billy Stanlake will return after a toe injury. It should be a thrilling match with Australia fighting hard to remain in the series.

Honourable mentions around the globe go to the start of Royal Ascot in the UK. The week-long flat racing event is one of the the highlights of the horse racing calendar. Battaash and Lady Aurelia are the favourites  for the King’s Stand Stakes, in what should be a thrilling duel in the featured race. In football, there are FIFA World Cup 2018 matches between Colombia and Japan at the Mordovia Arena in Saransk, Poland and Senegal at the Spartak Stadium in Moscow, and Russia and Egypt at the Krestovsky Stadium in Saint Petersburg. In MLB, the New York Yankees battle it out with the Seattle Mariners at Yankee Stadium in New York. The ATP World Tour continues featuring; the Queen’s Club Championships Day 2 at Queen’s Club in London and the Gerry Weber Open Day 2 at Gerry Weber Stadium in Halle, whilst on the WTA Tour, it is the Nature Valley Classic Day 2 in Birmingham, and the Mallorca Open Day 2 at Santa Ponsa Tennis Academy in Mallorca. Elsewhere in cricket, there is the 5th match of the Tri-Nations T20 International Series between the Netherlands and Scotland at the VRA Ground in Amstelveen.
