Our event of the day is the first day of the Queen’s Club Championships at the Queen’s Club in London. The ATP World Tour 500 series event has some of the finest grass courts on the Tour and is one of a few tournaments that serve as a lead-up for the season’s third Grand Slam, the Wimbledon Championships. Spaniard Feliciano López is the defending champion, while the list of challengers is led by world No. 6, Marin Čilić from Croatia. Last year’s finalist and winner from 2012 will today take on Fernando Verdasco of Spain in the first round. The 2010 champion and number five seed, American Sam Querrey will face home player Jay Clarke. Stan Wawrinka from Switzerland will come up against another British player, Cameron Norrie.
The first match of the day is the duel between Canada’s Denis Shapovalov and Gilles Müller from Luxembourg; while Monday’s programme will be concluded with the clash of sixth seeded Jack Sock from USA and Russian Daniil Medvedev. The tournament has a great lineup this year with the Queen’s champion for a record five times, home player Andy Murray playing his first match of the season in London, having been out of action due to a hip injury since last July. Former world number one and winner of 12 Grand Slams, Serbian Novak Djokovic, received a wild card from the organisers, while 2014 champion Grigor Dimitrov is the tournament’s second seed. David Goffin, Milos Raonic, Kevin Anderson, Nick Kyrgios, Tomáš Berdych and Kyle Edmund will all take part as well. The competition should be thrilling and we will see a lot of top-class tennis at the Queen’s Club over the week ahead.
Honourable mentions around the globe go to Day 5 of the FIFA World Cup in Russia. In the Group G first round clash, Tunisia face England at the Volgograd Arena in Volgograd. In the other game from that group, Belgium meet Panama at the Fisht Olympic Stadium in Sochi; while in Group F, Sweden come up against South Korea at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium in Nizhny Novgorod. In the MLB, the Washington Nationals meet the New York Yankees at Nationals Park in Washington, whilst the Chicago Cubs clash with the Los Angeles Dodgers at Wrigley Field in Chicago. It’s the fifth and final day of the 2nd Test between West Indies and Sri Lanka at the Darren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in St Lucia. In the Royal London One Day Cup second semi-final, Hampshire go head-to-head with Yorkshire at the Rose Bowl in Southampton. It’s the opening day at two WTA World Tour events – the Nature Valley Classic in Birmingham and the Mallorca Open at the Santa Ponsa Tennis Academy in Mallorca. It’s also Day 1 of the ATP World Tour’s Gerry Weber Open at the Gerry Weber Stadium in Halle.
Whatever you’re watching, enjoy!
