It first took place in 1829 and has since become one of the oldest and most prestigious sporting events in the world. The race attracts hundreds of thousands of spectators and is broadcasted to millions around the globe. The competition is between two prestigious universities, the University of <a href="https://www.fixturecalendar.com/country-united-kingdom/city-oxford-1">Oxford</a> and the University of <a href="https://www.fixturecalendar.com/country-united-kingdom/city-cambridge-1">Cambridge</a>, and is divided into two categories - men's and women's. Each team consists of eight rowers and a coxswain. The race begins at Putney and ends at Mortlake, covering a distance of approximately 6.8 kilometers. The winning team is awarded the historic silver trophy, <a href="https://www.fixturecalendar.com/sport-rowing/competition-the-boat-race">The Boat Race</a> Cup, which has been exchanged between the universities for over 100 years.
