Gina Carano is a retired American mixed martial artist who helped bring women’s MMA to a wider audience through high-profile competitions in EliteXC and Strikeforce. Competing primarily as a lightweight, she built a professional record of seven wins and one loss, with victories over opponents including Julie Kedzie, Tonya Evinger, Kelly Kobold, and Kaitlin Young. Carano’s most notable bout came at Strikeforce: Carano vs. Cyborg in August 2009, when she challenged Cristiane “Cyborg” Justino for the Strikeforce women’s featherweight championship and lost by first-round TKO. Although she did not earn a major MMA championship, Carano became one of the sport’s best-known female fighters and was widely recognized as a pioneer in the growth of women’s mixed martial arts. She trained at Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas during her fighting career. Carano was an individual athlete, not a member of a team named Gina Carano, so she had no dedicated team stadium; her fights took place at event venues, including arenas used by EliteXC and Strikeforce. Her career and landmark 2009 title fight remain important topics for fans researching women’s MMA history.
