The Martinique football team represents the French Caribbean island in regional and international competition. Although Martinique is not a member of FIFA and cannot qualify for the FIFA World Cup, it competes in CONCACAF tournaments and the Caribbean Cup. The team has appeared several times in the CONCACAF Gold Cup, with its best run reaching the quarter-finals in 2002. Martinique also won the Coupe de l’Outre-Mer in 2010, a competition for French overseas territories. Its players are eligible to represent France internationally, and the squad has included notable talents such as forward Kévin Parsemain and midfielder Gaël Germany. The team’s home venue is Stade Pierre-Aliker in Fort-de-France, a major stadium with a capacity of around 18,000 that hosts football and other sporting events. Known as Les Matinino, Martinique often draws on players from local clubs as well as footballers competing in France and elsewhere. Its regional rivalries and regular Gold Cup appearances make the team an important presence in Caribbean football, while its results offer a useful measure of the island’s growing influence in CONCACAF.
