The <a href="https://www.fixturecalendar.com/sport-football/competition-efl-trophy">EFL Trophy</a>, formerly known as the Football League Trophy, is an annual football competition in <a href="https://www.fixturecalendar.com/sport-cricket/team-england-1">England</a> open to clubs in League One and League Two, as well as some invited clubs from the <a href="https://www.fixturecalendar.com/sport-football/competition-national-league">National League</a>. The competition was established in 1983 and has since featured 64 teams, divided into 16 groups of four. The top two teams from each group advance to the knockout stage, with the final being held at <a href="https://www.fixturecalendar.com/stadium-wembley-stadium">Wembley Stadium</a>. Past winners include <a href="https://www.fixturecalendar.com/city-portsmouth">Portsmouth</a>, <a href="https://www.fixturecalendar.com/sport-football/team-lincoln-city">Lincoln City</a>, and <a href="https://www.fixturecalendar.com/city-sunderland">Sunderland</a>. The <a href="https://www.fixturecalendar.com/sport-football/competition-efl-trophy">EFL Trophy</a> also provides a platform for young up-and-coming players to showcase their talents, with each team required to field six players under the age of 21 in their starting line-up. With a prize money of over £1 million and the opportunity to lift a coveted trophy, the <a href="https://www.fixturecalendar.com/sport-football/competition-efl-trophy">EFL Trophy</a> is a highly competitive and prestigious tournament in the world of English football.
